QUICK GUIDE TO INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE PHILIPPINES 56th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

PREFACE

2020 opened with a volcanic eruption, which is then trailed by a global

pandemic, and peppered with spurts of political/economic/social turmoil
on local and international shores, giving this year a vibe like it’s the end
of the world!

But it is in such circumstances that human resiliency and ingenuity are

brought to the fore! We all quickly adapted to technological tools to
carry forth amidst the new normal. We gave spark to a long dormant
bayanihan spirit and extended our own dwindling assets to those who
need it more. We’ve espoused new behaviors and skills, and pivoted
mindsets and means to ensure safety, wellness and productivity.

And in this light, we at the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID)

are truly thankful and honored to be part of this year’s Hotel Suppliers
Show!

We believe that the Filipinos are amongst the toughest bunch. And we
are optimistic that together we are better! We at the PIID envision that
all industries shall rise and flourish once more, aided by such bold and
pioneering activities such as this virtual expo by Global Link and the
Chamber of Furniture Industries of the Philippines (CFIP)!

Wishing the best for this blessed endeavor!

Yours truly,

MARCELO T. ALONZO
National President, 2020-2021

QUICK GUIDE TO INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE PHILIPPINES 56th ANNIVERSARY EDITION

PIID at a glance
For the past 50 years, the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID)
has been at the forefront of the development of the interior design practice
and professionalism in the country.
Started by a dedicated group of professionals in 1964, the PIID has
grown by leaps and bounds from its initial founding group of seventeen
members based in Manila; to today’s 3,000 members located
nationwide. Instituting the country’s first interior design exhibitions from
1965 to 1970, the PIID has contributed to raising the consciousness of
Filipino interior design locally; and since 1987 in various international
fairs abroad.
The most significant role of the PIID, however, was its leadership in
instituting the professionalization of practice for interior designers.
Working with the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC),
members of the PIID worked to create the licensure examinations for
interior design starting in 1983. Through the Philippine Congress, it was
pivotal in the drafting and passing of relevant laws regulating interior
design practice in the Philippines, like Republic Act 8534 in 1998; and
Republic Act 10350 in 2012. A member of international design
organizations such as the Asia Pacific Space Designers Association
(APSDA), and the International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers
(IFI), the PIID is also the only Accredited Integrated Professional
Organization (AIPO) recognized by the PRC, in which all successful
passers of the interior design licensure exams automatically become
members of the PIID.
Overseen by its famed group of leading founders and Presidents, like Wili
Fernandez, Gerry Contreras, Edith Oliveros, Leti Sablan Limpo, Belen
Sablan Morey, Sonia Santiago Olivares, Lor Calma, and Johnny Hubilla,
the PIID in its golden anniversary can lay claim to its goals of developing
the interior design practice in the Philippines via professionalization,
updated education, and ethical practice. In today’s highly globalized interior
design practice, the PIID’s commitment for excellence and
professionalism redounds to the benefit of every Filipino.
