LESSON 1: PRODUCTION AND PROPAGATION OF SOUND WAVES

Sound waves are mechanical and longitudinal waves. This means that sound waves need a
medium in order to travel or propagate. In terms of direction of propagation, they travel back and
forth or parallel to the direction of wave propagation. But how are sound waves produced? Do you
have any idea? Try this simple activity. Place your palm on your throat while you’re mentioning
your complete name. What have you observed? Did you feel a vibration?
Vibration of objects or different media causes the production of sound. If there is nothing to
vibrate, then there will be no sound produced. This also implies that sound waves cannot
propagate or be produced in a vacuum, because there is no material or medium that would cause
vibration. Can sound travel in different media?
Speed of Sound Waves in Different Media
Sound waves can only be produced and propagated if there’s a medium, thus, they can also
travel in different media. The speed of sound waves depends on the type of medium where they
travel.

Look at figure 1:

How would you

describe the particles of
a solid? a liquid? and a
gas? In what kind of
medium do you think
will the sound waves
travel fastest?

As you can see in figure 1, the particles of a solid medium are compact or very close to each
other as compared to the particles of a liquid and a gas. Since the energy carried by the sound
waves is transmitted from one particle to another, therefore, the energy transmission and
propagation of sound waves will be fastest in solids. Where do you think will the sound waves
travel second fastest and slowest? Why? Correct! Sound waves travel second fastest in liquids
and slowest in gases. As shown in the figure, the particles of liquids are closer to each other than
the particles of gases, hence, sound waves will be transmitted faster in liquids than in gases.

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: Sound Check!

Objective: Describe how sound waves are produced.

Materials: 1 piece of rubber band, pen and paper
Procedure:
1. Study and analyze how sound is produced by the instrument shown in the picture below.
How do guitars produce sound?
2. Try to stretch a rubber band using your left index finger and
thumb. Then pluck the rubber band the same way the strings of
a guitar is plucked. What did you observe?
3. If there is nothing to vibrate, will there be sound produced?

Closure: How are sounds produced?

Activity 2: Sounds Like You’re Faster Than Me!
Objectives: Compare the speed of sound in different media.
Materials: Pen and paper
Procedure:
1. Study and analyze how the particles of the materials in the table are arranged.
2. Then choose the material that would transmit sound best. Write the letter of the correct
answer in your answer sheet.
No. A B
1 Water Air
2 Wood Alcohol
3 Oil Ice
4 Wooden table Water in the pool
5 Air in the room Steel cabinet
CLOSURE
In which type of materials will sound waves travel fastest, second fastest and slowest?
Why do you say so?
WRAP-UP
To summarize what you have learned, complete the paragraph below by arranging the
scrambled letters to form the correct word. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
Sound waves are produced through (1) NIOTIVRAB of objects. They are considered CHANEMLACI
waves because they also require a EDMUIM in order to travel or propagate. They cannot travel through a
UAVMUC. Sound waves are also called LANIDUTINGOL waves because they travel back and forth or
LELLARAP to the direction where the wave travels. The DESPE of sound waves vary. It depends on the
type of material medium they are traveling to. Sound waves travel fastest in DOSILS, second fastest in
UIDLIQS and slowest in GESSA.

VALUING
Can you imagine how would the world be like without sound? You may be thinking that your life would
be boring if there is no sound at all. Sounds are very important to express yourself and to understand and
connect with the people around you. Sounds are used not only for communication but also in music or
entertainment, for signals or alarms, and even in medicine. In the next activity, you will be exploring more
about the importance of sound in your daily life.
Activity 3: It Sounds Great!
Objective:
Appreciate the importance of sound in our daily life.
Materials: Pen and paper
Procedure:
1. Think of the uses and importance of sound in your life.
2. Create a short spoken poetry/poem about the importance of sound.
3. Write it on a separate sheet of paper.
Closure:
Do you consider sound important in your life? Why?

POST TEST
Directions: Read each statement below. If you believe that the statement is correct, place a check
(√) in the AGREE column, but if you believe that it is wrong, then place a check (√) in the
DISAGREE column. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
