Curriculum Reflection
The Social Studies national curriculum caters to various learning styles by allowing
students to demonstrate mastery of the learning outcomes in many different ways. For example,
the action verbs for the learning outcomes for the Weather and Climate strand are at different
levels of bloom’s taxonomy. The strand has action verbs such as identify, describe, explain
which are the lower level of the taxonomy and it also has action verbs such as investigate,
deliver, create which are at the higher level of the taxonomy. This allows for students to use
various learning styles as they are using their linguistic and visual intelligence to describe and
explain just as they use their kinesthetic,logical, and spatial intelligence to create, investigate and
deliver. They also use their interpersonal and interpersonal intelligence to discuss and role play.
One way the curriculum can improve is to spend a bit more time learning about the
Ancient Mayan civilization. There is only one unit which teaches about the Maya civilization
and there is a lot of history and culture for students to learn about.
The curriculum assists with the accomplishment of developing critical thinking since it
requires students to do more than just learn content. It requires students to observe, analyze, and
communicate their observations. Students analyze weather patterns, economic trends, and
governmental aspects of the country which makes them think critically in order to be citizens
One attitude the curriculum helps students develop is tolerance. They learn about the
diversity of the world around them. They learn there is diversity in the environment and the
people around them. Students learn about the importance of having a variety of people, animals,
and plants in order for nature and society to work. Students learn to appreciate having an array of
