REFLECTION PAPER

Care by nurses goes beyond just by treating patients who are sick and injured. They are advocate for
patient rights when they see that patients have no strength to give their own preference or when healthcare
givers see that patient’s rights has been trampled on, give advices when patients are in conflict, and offer
emotional support to patients that are losing hope in their treatment. They are faced by decision making every
single day in the healthcare setting. The decisions they make has a great impact to a patient being rendered care
to. So a nurse not only has to be good in their skills but they also need broad knowledge on health related
information.

At the time of our beloved mother of nursing Florence Nightingale, where research was just about to
bloom, she took care of the soldiers during a war; she observed how their recovery was painfully slow and some
even acquired infection despite being treated already. So she took notice of the state of their environment, she
saw how it influenced their healing physically and mentally. She took action by clearing, arranging and letting
air inside the room it affected the gradual restoration of those who are injured physically and created relief
mentally thus the creation of the environmental theory. And up to this day we are applying her theory in the
healthcare setting where the healthcare provider takes initiative to configure the environment to a much more
suitable place to recover. Starting with this simple research our health care system has achieved great heights in
order to provide quality care to every patient and client that are in need.

The heights that we achieved are thanks to research. And research in general, answers questions to solve
problems. Research provides tools for observation in order to generate knowledge as basis for predicting and
controlling the phenomenon. Thus, a nurse can apply this knowledge in practice and prescribe accurately and
professionally without untoward client response or reactions to nursing interventions. (Polit and Beck 2004) and
Nursing is a profession that needs constant up-to-date facts and answers that are essential to patient care since
one of its goal is effectiveness. Controlling the phenomenon in nursing is such as avoiding undesirable care
outcomes and undesirable patient reactions. As a result of research, we had advance far greater than our history.
It may be a vigorous path but in the end it’ worthy of all. Especially in our time now where classes are
temporarily suspended due to the pandemic, research has been on the move to find a cure that may help us
return to our normal lives. It may have been months but the quest to find the answer to all this chaos is still on
the move. It is reasonable since all aspects of the human being is being considered in the making of the remedy.

Another contribution of research to me as a student nurse, is that it helps me understand our lessons
more by providing explanations to difficult cases and techniques, it illustrates how nursing process works, how
equipments are made and are used to delivery of care and most of all how essential it is to the quality of life.
