Electron Beam Lab Measurements

Initial Configuration
1. From Canvas, open the Online Lab Measurements: Ch. 22B Assignment in the Chapter 22B
Module. After you have read all the instructions in this document, click the link at the bottom
of the Assignment page to launch the MH Connect Lab.
2. When the MH Connect Home page opens, do not open the Lab by clicking on the arrow at
right. Instead, click and open the Lab eBook from the link at left:

3. When the eBook opens, navigate in the menu at left to the Electron Beam item and open it.

4. Scroll down to the Electron Beam App and reduce your browser zoom until the entire
apparatus is visible.
Calibration Measurements
1. The gun that emits the electrons is in a glass cube 20 cm on a side. The gun is 7.0 cm from
the center of the cube, 3.0 cm from the side nearest to it, and 17.0 cm from the side farthest
from it.
2. Set the Voltage to 3.0 kV and the Current to 2.5 A. This will generate a beam completely
contained within the cube. Now reduce the current until the beam just touches the wall, and
record the value of the current. Click the beam at the wall where it intersects the ruler. Verify
that this is 17.0 cm, the distance from the gun to the wall. (I could get no closer than 16.9 cm,
but that is close enough to call 17.0.)

Click here to verify the distance

from the gun to the opposing face.

3. Calculate the length of the diagonal of the top cube face. This is the coil diameter, and half of
that is the coil radius 𝑎𝑎. Record this value for later use.
Experimental Measurements
Measure the beam diameter at three voltages (2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 kV), and at three currents for each
voltage (3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 A). All nine combinations of voltage and current should produce a
circular electron beam fully contained within the cube.
Enter all calibration and beam diameter data in an Excel spreadsheet.
You have completed all measurements for the Lab. Close the Electron Beam App and return to
Canvas. Continue with the Online Lab Analysis: Ch. 22B item in the Chapter Module.
