SUBJECT: PEC (2g) - Elimination of pick up from earth circuits.

INTRODUCTION

1. a. During production it was reported that pick up from the transmitter

earth by the microphone input circuits was resulting in unwanted
modulated transmissions. Investigation showed that the pick up was
not identical on the microphone lines thus conciliation does not
occur even though they are balanced. This spurious modulation is
most noticeable on A.M. on the top frequency range.

b. To eliminate this modulation capacitor Cl0 is removed, resistor

R3 added, and the earth associated with the input circuits is
disconnected from the transmitter earth and connected to earth of
the motherboard.

C. The embodiment of this modification by the equipment manufacturer

will be incorporated in all future production. The modification will
be recorded by striking through figure 1 on the modification record

(Army Modification Code MO1102)

SUBJECT: PEC 2a - Change in value of capacitors Cl and C.5.

INTRODUCTION

1. a. During manufacture of board 2a it was'found that

(1) instances of instability occurring in the Automatic

Control Loop

(2) it failed to meet the specified cw switch on time

delay of 25mS.

Investigation of (1) revealed that the problem was caused by a

particular batch of Integrated Circuits (identified as 7541A and
B) used in the ML1 circuit position. A number of ICs from this
batch were tested in the rear panel and, capacitor C5 was found
to be the major cause of the problem. This capacitor is a
6.8pF' electrolytic connected to pin 23 of MLI, and decouples
the 'Mean Channel Reference' circuit; as the unwanted signals
are RF, this capacitor is too high in value. To obviate this
problem, capacitor 'C5' is changed in value from 6.8pF to 0.1p-F.

b. Investigation of (2) has shown that with the equipment

switched to transmit repeatedly, the delay time increases and it
was found that the timing circuit of MLI, Cl and C3 was not
discharging quickly enough to reach a stable voltage. TO
obviate this problem capacitor 'Cl' is changed in value from
15@LF to KqLF.

This regulation details the action required to embody the

modification on failure of 'MLI'.

C. There is no limitations on the use of equipment without

this modification.

These Pages 1-3, Issue 2 supersede Pages 1-3, Issue 1 dated Jun 78. The
information has been revised throughout.

SUBJECT: P.E.C. 6 - Addition of Resistor RI6 and minor wiring changes.

INTRODUCTION

1. During the current production of the UK/RT 320, a loss of transmission

was experienced at high temperature due to the breakdown of the gate circuit
ML3(CN593) (582o-gg-622-5028) on Screen Can Unit Assembly (Board 6c-d) (5820-
99-622-7500). This fault also causes the failure of Transistor TRI (5961~gg-
118-3464) on Power Supply Unit (Board 5b) (5820-99-622-7499). Investigation
has show-n that the primary failure was caused by an avalanche type breakdown
within the integrated circuit (CN-593) used on Board 6d. The breakdown being
associated with unwanted PNP structures formed between the substrates and
certain resistors in the gate circuits. Appropriate gain in the PNP device
causes current to be shunted into the substrates and breakdown is experienced.
This allows the integrated circuit (CN593) to draw excessive current causing
the failure of TRI due to over dissipation. To obviate this problem, a 1 Wz
limiting resistor is fitted in series with the gates of the CN593 device and
wire No. 062 and 038 are removed from Pin 11 and reconnected to Pin 6 of the
p.e.c. (Board 6). This regulation details the action required to embody the
modification on failure of Board 6.

SUBJECT: PM; 6e - Inability to accept low gain devices in the TR3 circuit
position

INTRODUCTION

1. a. During production the manufacturer has encountered a high reject

rate of transistor BCY70 used in module 6e as TR3. Investigation has
revealed that failure to meet specification for gain was due to the
inability of the existing circuit design to accommodate the wide range
of d.c. gain performance of the existing device.

b. To obviate this problem the existing BCY 70 has been replaced by

a KY71 which has a higher d.c. gain, and R9 and RIO have been
changed to 27 and 12 ohms respectively.

C. This modification will be embodied on all future production by

the equipment manufacturer. The modification will be recorded by
striking through figure 1 (one) on the modification record plate of the

SUBJECT: P.E.C. 2a - to eliminate low frequency oscillations and reduce

high peak current, R 35 reinstated and D5 added

INTRODUCTION

1.1 During production testing of p.e.c. 2a, instability was discovered

in the r-f. power amplifier. This was due to an oscillation triggered
by a switching pulse which passed through the amplifier circuit when
switching from high to mean power. To overcome this problem, resistor
R35 was replaced by a wire link. Approximately 100 sets were made to
this build standard (p.e.c. 2a strike off 3) but the serial numbers are
unknown. Further build of sets with this modification were found to
take a high peak current at certain frequencies. Removing the strike
off 3 modification and adding diode D5 effectively reduced the level of
the unwanted triggering pulse. This modification is identified by p.e.c.
2a strike off 4.

SUBJECT: Rotation of ATU spindle under vibration, introduction of disc brake

INTRODUCTION

1.1 During audit testing of the UK/RT 320, it was found that the ATU drive
mechanism rotated under vibration. The current build of UK/RT 320 had no
lock on the ATU tuning mechanism and, if the unit was subjected to shock
or vibration, it was likely to detune. To overcome this problem, a disk
brake and shaft was designed as a direct replacement for the Gear and
Shaft Assembly, Spur.

1.2 The modification will be embodied on failure, when stocks are

SUBJECT: PFC 2b - Redesign of transformer AUT I

INTRODUCTION

1. a. During production testing of the reflectometer board, PEG 2b,

it failed to meet its specification. Investigation revealed that this
was due to the design of the AUT 1 transformer. The termination lead
for the inductor emerges from the winding on one side of the pot core
and passes over the top of the pot core assembly to a terminal on the
other side. The sleeving over this wire tends to split and causes the
wire to short circuit to the pot core assembly clamp.

b. To obviate this problem the transformer has been redesigned and

will be embodied by the manufacturer in all future production. The
modification is recorded by striking through the figure 1 (ONE) on the
modification record label of PM: 2b.

INTRODUCTION

I. a. It has been reported by the Service User that the mechanical

end stop on the ATU Drive Spindle Z1/5820-59-622-8234 fails to function
and allows the ATU to over-run. An investigation was carried out on
several faulty units, and it was revealed that malfunction was due to
extreme tolerance build up, whereby a total float of up to 0.020 in.
could exist between adjacent tag washers, so allowing one tag washer
to over-ride its neighbour and thereby causing a failure of the
mechanical stop. To obviate this problem, a complete new ATU lW.ve
Spindle has been manufactured to new dimensions and tolerances.

b. This regulation details the action required to embody the

SUBJECT: Malfunction of Integrated Circuit CN 325F

INTRODUCTION

1. a. It has been found that when certain synthesisers (5820-99-IIO-

3480) are fitted in the front panel of the UK/RT 320 the Side Step
Programming Generator malfunctions. This shows as an incorrect
transmit/receive frequency when zero is selected on the 100 Hz switch,
ISIO.

b. Investigation revealed that power to the Side Step Programming

Generator IC was switched off while the code inputs still had logic
signals on them. From the switches truth table, zero is the only
position where power to the IC is turned off.

C. To overcome this problem a wire link is inserted between pins 1

and 4 of the switch ISIO, the IC is then permanently powered

SUBJECT: P.E.C. 6b - inability to meet a.g.c. parameters

INTRODUCTION

1
1.1 During production of Panel, Electronic Circuit (Board 6b, 5820-99-
622-7508) it has been found that it failed test in respect of a.g.c.
parameters.
\
1.2 Investigation revealed that the a.g.c. device was level conscious,
and that the fault could be overcome by the addition of a 68 B resistor
which reduces the charge on capacitor C2 during the 25 ms pulse period,
thus enabling the device to restore the a.g.c. level in a shorter time.
This modification is identified by p.e.c. strike off 1.

1.3 RAOC may issue the equipment without this modification embodied.

1.4 There are no limitations to use for equipments without this

modification embodied.

SUBJECT: P.E.C. 2a - Inability to meet 6 V supply current consumption limits.

INTRODUCTTON

1. a. During production of Panel, Electronic Circuit (Board 2a)

(5820-99-624-41961 problems were encountered due to its inability
to meet the 6 V supply current consumption limits.

b. Investigation of production p.e.c.s, revealed that the forward

voltage of D4 was high in some cases, thus reducing TR3 and TR4
emitter current, which reflected as a low current demand on the 6 V
supply.

C. To overcome this problem, a selected resistor is fitted in series

with D4 to permit the accurate setting of the 6 V line current
parameter. This is achieved by replacing the fixed resistor (Rl4)
with a variable resistor. This modification is identified by Board
2a Strike off 7.

SUBJECT: P.E.C. (2a) - change in value of capacitor C2 (compatibility with

Digital Message Handling Device (DMHD).

INTRODUCTION

1.1 To ensure optimum performance when used with DMHD, it is required

that the RT 326 produce peak power transmit during the time period 0.1 s
to 2.2 s. Tests have shown that the period of peak power can be well
below that required. This is overcome by changing the value of capacitor
C2 from 100 @' to 220 @', thus ensuring that peak power for the required
time period will be produced under all operating conditions.

1.2 This regulation details the action required to embody the modifica-
tion when requested by the user and when necessary to preserve the front

1.2 To overcome the problem each of the first six 1 metre points, where
greater accuracy of antenna length is essential, is to be identified by an
additional marker. The new markers, which are to be fitted in addition to
the existing 'tied' markers, are large and thus easily distinguishable
and, being plastic, can be easily fitted, removed or adjusted even when
arctic gloves are worn. These markers will enable the desired whole
number of metres to be identified from which the intervening 4 metre
markers can be counted.

1.3 The adjustable nature of the new markers will also give the User the
option, if desired, of identifying predetermined antenna lengths which can
be set up prior to the start of an exercise or operation.
