BULLYING IN

UTAH

20.8% of Students Report Being Bullied

This means that approximately one in every five

students has experienced bullying in some form.
This statistic from schools.utah.gov represents just
how unsafe Utah classrooms can be.

Why are students being bullied?

schools.utah.gov reports that:

-55% of students are bullied because of their looks.
-37% because of their body shape.
-16% because of race.
These statistics show that many different types of
discrimination are shown throughout Utah High
Schools.

40% of children with autism have been victims of

bullying. As well as 60% of children with Aspergers.
Double the percentage of these children were told to
keep quiet about their bullying when compared to
other victims.

Additionally, 74.1% of LGBTQ+ students have

experienced verbal abuse because of their sexual
orientation.
TYPES OF
DISCRIMINATION

SEXUAL ORIENTATION
1
Discrimination based on sexual orientation
involves being treated or judged harshly based
on who one loves or which gender one
identifies with.

(Sexual Orientation is covered under Title VII

of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.)
DISABILITY
2
Discrimination based on disability is targeted
discrimination at those who suffer from
mental or physical disabilities.

(Disability Discrimination is covered under

Title I and Title V of the Americans with
Disabilities Act.)
RELIGION
3
Religious Discrimination is the prevention of
religious practices, or the harsh treatment of
someone because of their religious beliefs.

(Religious discrimination is covered under

Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.)

RACE
Racial Discrimination occurs when
4

someone is treated differently because of

unalterable characteristics.

(Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act

Prohibits such discrimination.)

5 GENDER
Gender discrimination occurs when men and
women are treated differently based on
gender. It can come in the form of gestures,
comments, physical contact, etc.

(Gender Discrimination is also covered under

Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.)

6 NATIONAL ORIGIN
Discrimination based on National Origin is
when someone is treated differently because
of where they were born.

(Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects

against this kind of discrimination.)
HOW TO
FIGHT
BACK

TEACH HOW TO ACT

Adults, especially parents and educators
have the opportunity to take the first
step. Teaching students how to treat
other kids is the first step in preventing
discrimination.

HELP OTHERS
UNDERSTAND
Many studnets have never found
themselves as the victims of bullying.
They don't see it as a problem because
they simply do not understand. Teaching
other students to have compassion for
what they haven't experienced can
prevent discrimination.

SHARE YOUR
EXPERIENCES
As stated before, many students do not
have first hand experience with bullying
and discrimination. Sharing your own
experiences could be the first step in
preventing more bullying and
discrimination.

EDUCATE YOURSELF
ON BULLYING AND
DISCRIMINATION
In order to combat bullying and
discrimination in your own school, you
need to know about the topic. Learning
more about something will help you
spread knowledge on how to prevent
the problem.
