Footnote 1: The weight of a configured X7-8 and X7-4 chassis varies depending on which
blade options are installed. The weight referenced above reflects a fully populated X7-8
chassis with four power supplies, three blowers and all blades (CPX7s, CR64-8s, and port
blades). Consult the hardware reference manual for the specific chassis you are configuring
for individual blade chassis and blade weights.
Footnote 2: Heat output varies depending on installed options. The heat output numbers
shown above are based on a full configuration using 48-port blades (all power supplies,
blowers, CPX7s, CR64-8s, and port blades). Consult the hardware reference manual for the
specific chassis you are configuring for more detailed information.
The X7-8 Director contains 10 full-height slots and two half-height slots, for a total of 12
slots.
Facing the port side of the device, the half-height slots are on the left, numbered 1 (top slot)
and 2 (bottom slot). The remaining full-height slots are numbered 3 through 12, counting
from left to right of chassis.
Slots contain guide pins and connectors designed for specific blade types. Only install the
control processor (CP), core routing (CR), port, and extension blades into slot numbers as
follows:
• Slots 1–2 are restricted to CP blades. Note that the blade installed in slot 1 will be
designated as CP0, while the blade in slot 2 will be designated as CP1 in CLI command
and message output.
• Slots 3–6 and slots 9–12 are restricted to port and extension blades.
• Slots 7–8 are restricted to CR64-8 core blades.
Depending on fans and power supplies that are installed, airflow can be from the port side to
the nonport side of the chassis or from the nonport side to the port side of chassis.
Although not illustrated, the chassis label that contains the serial number, SKU, and WWN is
located on the lower portion of the chassis, below the fan assemblies.
Footnote 1: All three FRUs are used in both the 4-slot and 8-slot chassis.

The X7-4 Director contains 6 full-width slots and two half-width slots, for a total of 8 slots.
Facing the port side of the device, the half-width slots are on the top, numbered 1 and 2 from
left to right. The remaining full-width slots are numbered 3 through 8, counting from top to
bottom of the chassis.
Slots contain guide pins and connectors designed for specific blade types. Only install the

• Slots 5–6 are restricted to CR64-4 blades.
Depending on the fans and the power supplies installed, airflow can be from the port side to
the nonport side or from the nonport side to the port side of the chassis through the side air
vent. Use the Chassis Airflow Diversion and Port Side Exhaust Kit to divert airflow so that air
fully exhausts to the port side of the chassis or is fully drawn from the port side of
the chassis while mounted in a four-post rack.
Although not illustrated, the chassis label that contains the serial number, SKU, and WWN is
located on the upper portion of the chassis to the left of the fan assemblies.

The arrows in the above diagram represents the general airflow path through the chassis for
blade cooling. Air is drawn into or exits the non-port side by the fans or exhausted out or
enters the side of the chassis depending on airflow direction.
The X7-4 can be installed in equipment racks that support side exhaust. If side
exhaust/intake is not supported by the rack, there is a rack mount package available to divert
the side exhaust/intake to the front of the rack. The package is called the Port Side air Kit,
and was developed for and tested with major OEM equipment racks. With the shelf at 1U, a
total of 9U rack space is required to install the shelf and the X7-4.

The Port Side Air Kit contains two main components: the duct (mounted to the side of the
rack), and the shelf (mounted below the chassis). Additional brackets are available to be
attached to the side exhaust kit for installation in rack mounts to support varying rack mount
depths.
With the Port Side Kit installed air is redirected to or pulled from the front of the chassis.
Airflow is diverted from the side of the chassis up to the power supply exhaust and down to
the air channel in the 1U shelf.

The X7-4 and X7-8 directors use the same CPX7 control processor (CP) blade. The CP
blades provide processing for directors and monitors the overall functionality of the chassis
including hardware functionality and Fabric OS software functionality.
Both directors use two half-height CPX7 control processor blades for redundancy and high
availability. When the chassis is powered on, one CP becomes the active CP blade and the
other is in standby state. If the active CP fails, the standby CP becomes the active CP.
