4 DESIGN OF A TUNED MASS DAMPER

The design of a damped TMD for an un-damped structure involves the

following steps:

• Establish the allowable values of displacement of the primary mass and the TMD for
the design loading. This data provides the design values for 𝐻𝐻2|𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 and 𝐻𝐻4|𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 .

• Determine the mass ratios required to satisfy these motion constraints from Figure
3.8 and Figure 3.9. Select the largest value of 𝑚𝑚
.

• Determine 𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 :

Use Figure 3.6 or Equation (3.64)

• Compute 𝜔𝜔𝑑𝑑 :

𝜔𝜔𝑑𝑑 = 𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝜔𝜔 (3.76)

• Compute 𝑘𝑘𝑑𝑑 :

𝑘𝑘𝑑𝑑 = 𝑚𝑚𝑑𝑑 𝜔𝜔𝑑𝑑2 = 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜

• Determine 𝜉𝜉𝑑𝑑|𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 :

Use Figure 3.7 or Equation (3.68)

• Compute 𝑐𝑐𝑑𝑑 :

𝑐𝑐𝑑𝑑 = 2𝜉𝜉𝑑𝑑|𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑚𝑚𝑑𝑑 𝜔𝜔𝑑𝑑 = 𝑚𝑚

 𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 [2𝜉𝜉𝑑𝑑|𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔] (3.78)

• Determine Pendulum Length (L):

Use Equation (3.74)
