2. What everyday devices are similar to the ones used for these activities? Why?
ANS: The one used in this activity is a servo motor. A servo motor is a type of electric motor
that work to control many kinds of motors. Something similar to it is another type of motor
called the brush DC motor. They both are like a propeller-like rotating motor. The only
difference is Servo motor does not rotate freely and continuously like DC motor. Its rotation is
limited to 180⁰ whereas DC motor rotates continuously. Another thing used in this activity is a
pushbutton. A pushbutton is very useful in terms of turning things on/off or for
increasing/decreasing. Similar to this is a light switch.
3. In what other ways can the devices in these activities be used in everyday life?
ANS: Robotics: A servo motor at every "joint" of a robot is used to actuate movements, giving
the robot arm its precise angle.
Push buttons are power controlling switches of a machine or appliance. Usually, they are
metal or thermoplastic switches that grant easy access to the user. Push buttons are
extensively used in industries, owing to the comfort and safety provided by them in several
industrial and commercial applications.
4. In what way can the devices used in these activities help at home or in the community?
ANS: Automatic Door Openers - Supermarkets and hospital entrances are prime examples of
automated door openers controlled by servo motors, whether the signal to open is via push
plate beside the door for handicapped access (this is where push buttons are used) or by radio
transmitter positioned overhead.
