Calculation of Water Tank

ITEM # 1: CONVERTION OF VOLUME TO FEET OF WATER:

FORMULA:
CUBIC FEET OF WATER = GALLONS OF WATER / 7.5
CUBIC FEET OF WATER = 15 000 / 7.5 = 2000 CUBIC FEET
CUBIC FEET OF WATER = 2 000 ft³

ITEM # 2: CALCULATION OF WEIGHT OF WATER:

FORMULA:
WEIGHT OF WATER IN POUNDS = CUBIC FEET OF WATER x 62.4
W = V x 62.4
W = 2000 x 62.4
W = 124 800 lbs.

ITEM # 3: ASSUMED HEIGHT OF THE TANK FOR BETTER

LONGITUDINAL PRESSURE

 We assumed 15 feet for better longitudinal pressure and Tangential Pressure

H = 15 ft.

ITEM # 4 : CALCULATION OF RADIUS OF WATER TANKS:

FOR CYLINDRICAL TANK:

FORMULA : V = r²H
V = Volume in Cubic Feet
 = 3.14 or 22/7, a constant
r = radius (half of the diameter) of the tank
H = Height in Feet

Computation: r = √ (v/H )
= √(2000/15x )
= 6.514 ft.

ITEM # 5: DIAMETER OF THE TANK

FORMULA
D = 2r
D = diameter

Computation: D = 2 x 6.514
D = 13.028

ITEM # 6: SHAPE AND FIGURE OF THE WATER TANK

FIGURE:

ITEM # 7: MASS OF WATER IN THE TANK:

FORMULA:
M=DxV
M = Mass of fluid
D = Mass density
V = Volume of the Tank

Comuputation: M = 62.4 x 2000 / 32.2

M = 3875.77 slug

ITEM # 8 : CROSS SECTIONAL AREA OF THE TANK AT THE BOTTOM:

A = r² UPPER VIEW:

Computation: A = (6.514)
A = 20.464 ft
ITEM # 9 : GAUGE PRESSURE OF THE TANK:

PGAUGE = W / A
W = Weight of tank
A = Cross – Sectional Area of the Tank

Calculation: PGAUGE = W / A
PGAUGE = 124 800 / 20.414
PGAUGE = 6098.414lb/ft²

ITEM # 10 : LONGITUDINAL – STRESS OF CYLINDRICAL-TANK

Note: to avoid error additional 4 times the gauge pressure of tank

FORMULA
SL (4 x PGAUGE )

Calculation : SL = 4 x 6098.44
SL = 24 393.659 lb/ft²

ITEM # 11 : ABSOLUTE PRESSURE IN WATER TANK:

FORMULA:
PAB = PATM + PGAUGE
PAB = ABSOLUTE PRESSURE
PATM = ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE
PGAUGE = GAUGE PRESSURE

Calculation: PATM = 14.7 lb/inch²

PAB = (14.7 x 12 x 12lb/ft²) + 6098.414
PAB = 8 215.214 lb/ft²

ITEM # 12 : MINIMUM THICKNESS OF WALL OF THE TANK:

Note: The minimum thickness of the tank is in longitudinal Stress

FORMULA:
t = [PAB x D/4 x SL]
t = thickness of the walled-cylindrical tank
SL = longitudinal-stress

Calculation: t = [(8215.214 x 13.028) / (24 393.6594)]

t = 1.097ft

according to the following format.
6. Make a uniform scaled drawing.

ITEM #13: FOR MINIMUM MATERIAL NEEDED IN DESIGN(elevated water

tank)

Using: MAXIMA – MINIMA from DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

Calculation:
V= r^2H
-least amount of material to be used
for an open top cylindrical tank
D=H
Since our design of water tank with
D=15.04ft and H=15ft
D is approximate to H then our material is in
minimum materials.
