Cycle 1 Mainstream
NELCF Cycle 1 Expectations:

• Can understand the overall meaning of short, simple texts with the help of pictures.
• Can participate in short, simple interactions on familiar topics.
• Can write short, simple sentences on familiar topics.

NELCF Cycle 1 Content:

• Learners will be taught English language through a variety of songs/rhymes, stories, short
conversations, descriptions and instructions.
• The topics relate to the learners’ immediate experiences and needs (i.e. families, friends and
school).
• Written and spoken texts are simple, clear and short.
• Learning is supported by images, gestures and repetition.
• Input speech is slow, clearly articulated and delivered in a familiar accent.

Cycle 1 Books:

All units of study are split across three terms. All materials are available in both hard copy and digital
format via LMS to allow for flexibility when delivering via the blended learning model.

• UAE Phonics Books 1-2 consist of 30 units of study and take an interactive approach to
developing basic literacy skills. With a focus on developing reading and writing skills through
structured and guided activities, learners are provided with opportunities to master basic literacy
skills.

• UAE Literacy Skills Book 3 consists of 22 units of study and is aimed at providing learners with
further support in developing basic literacy. Through structured and guided activities, learners are
provided with opportunities to review and consolidate basic reading and writing strategies in order
to achieve the literacy levels required for the Bridge to Success series.
• Access Book 4 consists of 9 thematic units of study and is aimed at scaffolding learners to access
the Bridge to Success content. The series takes a language-rich approach to developing skills
and communicative learning.

• Bridge to Success Books 2-4 consist of 9 thematic units of study and take an enquiry-based
approach to language learning. With a focus on promoting global citizenship, the materials reflect
both local Emirati and international perspectives through a range of activities, text types and
objectives.

• Can initiate and participate in a range of interactions on familiar and concrete topics.
• Can write simple, extended texts on familiar and concrete topics.

• Learners will be taught English through a variety of text types including poems, stories, monologues
and dialogues, descriptions, informative texts (which may include diagrams and graphs) and
instructions.
• Written and spoken texts are simple, extended and based on familiar and concrete topics.
• Delivery is in clear, standard English in a variety of accents.

concrete topics.
• Can initiate and participate in a range of interactions on familiar and concrete topics.
• Can speak coherently in extended exchanges using basic repair strategies to maintain the flow of
communication.
• Can write simple, extended texts on familiar and concrete topics.

NELCF Cycle 2 Elite Content:

• Learners will be taught English through a variety of text types including poems, stories, monologues
and dialogues, descriptions, informative texts (which may include diagrams and graphs) and
instructions.
• Written and spoken texts are simple, extended and based on familiar and some unfamiliar concrete
topics.
• Delivery is in clear, standard English in a variety of accents.

• Bridge to Success Books 5-6 (for Grade 5 Elite Students only) consist of 9 thematic units of study
and take an enquiry-based approach to language learning. With a focus on promoting global
citizenship, the materials reflect both local Emirati and international perspectives through a range of
activities, text types and objectives.
• Elite Books 6-9 cover 9 units of study and include a wide variety of interesting themes and topics
that will engage and motivate learners. With a strong focus on inquiry-based learning, activities are
designed to foster learner independence through problem-solving, critical thinking and collaborative
learning. Taking a unique approach to the teaching and learning of math and science concepts
through the English medium, the series promotes both explicit and integrated language instruction,
encompassing language strategies that facilitate learning and language use across the skills.

Cycle 3 Mainstream Books:

• Accelerated English Programme 9 (AEP) consists of 9 thematic units of study and provides a
solid basis for learners to accelerate from a foundational level of English in preparation for
intermediate study. The series sets out to develop and extend language skills through motivating,
real-world tasks whilst promoting both national identity and global citizenship.

• Access 9 (General) consists of 9 thematic units of study and is aimed at scaffolding learners to
access the Bridge to Success content. The series takes a language-rich approach to developing
skills and communicative learning.

• Bridge to Success Books 9-12 consist of 9 thematic units of study and take an enquiry-based
approach to language learning. With a focus on promoting global citizenship, the materials reflect
both local Emirati and international perspectives through a range of activities, text types and
objectives.

• Can understand overall meaning of complex, extended texts on concrete and abstract topics.
• Can express him/herself fluently with ease and skill in a range of contexts.
• Can use language flexibly and effectively for social and academic purposes.
• Can produce extended structured texts appropriate to task, purpose and audience.

NELCF Cycle 3 Elite Content:

• Learners will develop language skills through a variety of text types including poems, stories,
monologues and dialogues, descriptions, informative texts (diagrams and graphs) and instructions.
• Texts are complex and extended, and on concrete and abstract topics.
• Delivery is in standard English in a variety of different accents at natural speed.

Cycle 3 Elite Books:

All units of study are split across three terms. All materials are available in both hard copy (Grade 9

• Elite Book 9 covers 9 units of study and includes a wide variety of interesting themes and topics that
will engage and motivate learners. With a strong focus on inquiry-based learning, activities are
designed to foster learner independence through problem-solving, critical thinking and collaborative
learning. Taking a unique approach to the teaching and learning of math and science concepts
through the English medium, the series promotes both explicit and integrated language instruction,
encompassing language strategies that facilitate learning and language use across the skills.

• New Interactions Books 10-12 cover 6 units of study and are aimed at learners preparing to enter
higher education. The syllabus is equally weighted across the development of the four skills:
Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing, and provides a comprehensive curriculum that supports
essential language and communication skills, and vocabulary development. The series takes a hybrid
approach to delivering content as print coursebooks will be supported by digital learning tools to
ensure flexible and blended teaching and learning can take place.
Cycle 3 Applied Stream

NELCF Cycle 3 Applied Stream Expectations:

• Can understand the overall meaning of complex texts on concrete and some abstract topics.
• Can initiate and maintain interactions on familiar and unfamiliar topics.
• Can produce extended, structured texts on familiar and unfamiliar concrete topics.

NELCF Cycle 3 Applied Stream Content:

• Learners will be taught English through a variety of text types including poems, stories, monologues
and dialogues, descriptions, informative texts (diagrams and graphs) and instructions.
• Texts are complex and extended, and on concrete and some abstract topics.

Cycle 3 Applied Stream Books:

All units of study are split across three terms. All materials are available in both hard copy (and digital
format via LMS to allow for flexibility when delivering via the blended learning model.

• Applied Stream Book 9.1 consists of 9 thematic units of study and provides a solid basis for
learners to accelerate from a foundational level of English in preparation for intermediate study.
The series sets out to develop and extend language skills through real-world tasks whilst
promoting both national identity and global citizenship.

• Applied Stream Books 9.2 - 12.1 consist of nine thematic units of study and take an enquiry-
based approach to language learning. With a focus on promoting global citizenship, the materials
reflect both local Emirati and international perspectives through a range of activities, text types
and objectives.
• English Support for Applied Stream is a course designed to support learners during their
elective modules and is delivered by Applied Stream subject teachers. The course builds on the
subject content whilst teaching specialised language for industry. The materials are aligned with
the English Language Framework and promote a range of skills such as communication,
innovation, critical thinking and problem-solving.
Literacy for the UAE

Term 2 2020 Update: All of the following programmes will now fall under Literacy
for the UAE. As per the LMS, for Cycle 3, the majority of the LS4UAE lessons will
fall under the ‘self-study’, but is encourage that

• Literacy – Reading consists of 3 units of study and takes a bilingual approach to developing world-
class literacy skills across the curriculum. Aligned to both international and national standards, the
material focuses on building literacy across various domains, including focusing on and retrieving
explicitly stated information, making straightforward inference, interpreting and integrating
information and ideas, evaluating and critiquing content and textual elements, understanding overall
meaning and main ideas, locating and identifying information, and making connections and
understanding relationships.

• Cycle 1: Division 1 and 2 programme – Grades 2-4 primary readers
• Cycle 2 (Mainstream and Elite): Tiers 1 and 2 programme – Grades 5-8 secondary readers
• Cycle 3 (Mainstream, Elite and Applied Stream): Tiers 1-3 programme – Grades 9-12 secondary
readers

• Reading for Pleasure - Emirates Literature Foundation (all Cycles and streams) consists of 3 units
of study in both Arabic and English with a focus on three literature titles per language subject across
the year. Learners are expected to read the titles during the reading self-study periods and in their
own time. The programme aims to develop the love of reading and enhance literacy across the
curriculum

• Academic Writing (Elite Grades 8-11, Mainstream Grades 9-12 Adv / Grades 10-12 Gen and Applied
Stream Grades 10-12) covers 6 units of study and is aimed at building academic writing skills
appropriate for an international English language context. The course introduces academic writing
skills such as planning, note-making and using complex language structures. Learners are expected
to complete writing tasks on various text types such as: writing a short article, describing a process,
creating an informative poster and describing a graph etc.

• Literature covers one core literary text which is accompanied by comprehension questions at the
end of each chapter, with extra reading texts that are optional for students who wish to extend their
reading practice. The programme aims to develop students’ English language skills through an
exploration of classic literary texts and inculcate a culture of reading across the UAE as learners are
encouraged to engage with a variety of literary texts, themes and ideas. Through a deeper exposure
to selected literary texts, learners will be able to develop not only their English language skills, but
also their critical thinking and 21st century skills.
