Context

Mainstream rock/glam of the 80s was based

around, gluttony, debauchery, and hair spray, but
after a decade of excess, it seems a more
minimalistic sound was gaining popularity. Towns
and cities like Seattle, and Aberdeen, were the
catalyst for this new sound, combining elements of
punk, rock, and metal, the new genre Grunge was
born

By 1990 America was entering another recession,

a war in the gulf, and uncertainty of the new
century that was about to befall on them. Amongst
all of this melancholy, their seemed to be a more
abstract coping mechanism for the youth, music.

Grunge was digestible, minimalistic, and relatable,

there wasn’t complex apregios, or jaw dropping
solos. Nevermind’s top song was only five power
chords.
smells Like Teen Spirit, Nirvana’s first single off
their second album Nevermind, Peaked at #1 on
billboard, and stayed there for 20 weeks

Nevermind also sold 30 million copies, making it

one of the best selling albums of all time, it also
knocked Michael Jackson’s Dangerous off number
one

By 1993 Nirvana was the biggest band in America,

with nevermind their magnum opus. It is in this
year where I believe 80s sound fully “Died” Guns N
Roses broke up, Warrant lost their record label,
Motley Crue went on hiatus

They also released In utero

Unlike Hair Metal, Grunge didn’t wither away into

the back of our record collection, It went out with a
single man. April 4th 1994 Kurt Cobain was found
dead in his apparent, by n alleged suicide
