Attainment Targets:

Objectives:
Students will revise:

2. Understanding that $ sign represents dollar and ¢ represents cents
3. State what makes Jamaican money different from other country’s money
4. Tell the value of different sets of coins and notes
5. Recognise that a decimal point is used to separate dollars and cents
6. Recognise that 100 cents are equal to 1 dollar
7. Understand that two digits must always be behind the decimal point when writing cents

Content:
Money is used in our everyday lives. We use money to get the things that we need and want.
Jamaican currency has notes and coins. All Jamaican currency has the Jamaica coat of arms
printed on them. 100 cents are equal to 1 dollar. When writing dollars and cents a decimal point
is used to separate the dollar from the cents. The dollar is on the left side and the cent is on the
right of the decimal point. There must always be two digits after the decimal point so when
writing single digits use a place holder. When converting dollars into cents we move two places
to the left using a decimal point. If there is no decimal point it is cents only.

Materials:
Laptop, images of Jamaican Currency, slides

Engage:
The lesson will begin by explaining to the students that we will be revising money. The students
will be asked if they think money is important. The students will be asked to name some of the
things that we use money for. The students will be shown different Jamaican notes and coins and
asked to identify each. They will be asked what is common in all Jamaican notes and coins.

Explore:
The students will be asked which symbol represents dollar and which symbol represents cents.
The students will then be asked what separates the dollars from the cents? The students will be
asked how to write cents only. How many digits should be behind the decimal point? What
happens with a single digit number when writing cents? The students will then match the cents
amount to how it should be written in dollars and cents form

Explain:
The Students will be shown different dollar figures to call out the amount. They will then be
shown worded amounts to write the dollar and cents figures. The students will then be asked how
many cents make one dollar. The students will then be asked how do we converts cents only into
dollars and cents. They will be shown 250 cents and asked to change it into dollars and cents.
The students will then be shown bigger figures in cents and asked to convert it to dollars and
cents.

Elaborate:
After converting cents only into dollars and cents the students will then be asked how to convert
the dollars and cents back into cents only. The students will then be shown an addition statement
and asked to write out the sum and complete addition.

Evaluate:
The students will be given an end of term test.
