Lesson #8 of Unit

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE(S)

After a mini lesson on how to change a mixed number into an improper fraction, and students
will be able to change a mixed number to an improper fraction in order to be able to add and
subtract the mixed numbers with 75% accuracy.
Key Concepts - Student will demonstrate their knowledge of mixed numbers by changing them
into an improper fraction.

STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

Mathematics (NGLS): Numbers and Operations – Fractions

NY-4.NF.3c Add and Subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
 Indicator: this will be evident when students are able to change mixed numbers into
improper fractions and add the numerators.

MOTIVATION

The teacher will tell a math story and state the number as an improper fraction. Students will
visualize the story in their heads.

MATERIALS

Smartboard, smart notebook mini-lesson, pencils, worksheets, fraction strips, iPad, Nearpod
login, kahoot, padlet.

STRATEGIES

 Direct teacher instruction: The teacher will explain the steps to properly change a mixed
number to an improper fraction.
 Teacher Modeling: the teacher will model the steps to change a mixed number to an
improper fraction.
 Guided Practice: The students will be working in groups to change the mixed number to
an improper fraction, and add and subtract fractions. The teacher will provide the
students assistance when needed.
 Group discussions: The students will have group discussions on how to add/subtract
fractions. Discuss teacher questions the teacher poses.
ADAPTATIONS
For the student who is an English language learner the teacher will provide the explanation of the
activities in their native language. They will be provided with the steps to change the an
improper fraction to a mixed number in their native language.

DIFFERENTIATIONS OF INSTRUCTION

The teacher will differentiate the lesson by student ability and readiness. The teacher will tier the
students into groups by ability level. The teacher will tier the student’s classwork sheet (tier 1, 2,
and 3). The teacher will group tier 1 and tier 2 students to work together on the classwork. The
teacher will work with the tier group students in a small group to provide teacher support.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. The teacher will present an anchor chart on how to change mixed numbers to improper
fractions. 1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator. 2. Add the product and the
numerator. The sum is the new numerator. 3. The denominator stays the same. (What are
the steps to changing a mixed number? Why do I need a denominator under my improper
fraction? What do I need to do with the whole number and numerator?)
2. The teacher will model how to convert a mixed number into an improper fraction.
3. Partner Work: Students will work in partner to match the improper fraction to the correct
mix number. Each pair will receive the plastic Easter egg separated. The partners have to
work together to match the improper fraction with the correct mixed number.
4. Independent Work: Students will practice changing mixed number to improper fractions
and then adding/subtracting the number sentence.

ASSESMENT

The students will answer 5 questions using Kahoot.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

Students will create write a response on padlet to the following question: What are the steps to
changing a mixed number to an improper fraction?

FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHERR INTERVETION AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher will reteach the students by modeling how to represent
the mixed number using fraction strips and counting the number of parts to represent the
numerator. The teacher will allow the students to do their independent work on zearn.

Academic Enrichment: Students will play fraction card game. The students will work with a
partner and will use a deck of card to create fractions. They will add their fractions together. The
students will get points if they get the answer correct.
