Theoretical problem: A four (4) 20 x 30 plot inventory was conducted in a tropical

forest situated at higher elevation. The area was quarterly divided and these 4 plots
were observed to have a varying species composition and abundance. Instruction:
Write legibly. Compute for the diversity of these 4 communities using appropriate
method formulated by Shannon and Simspon. Round off your answers into three
decimal places. Compare and discuss the results. Come up with a conclusion based on
the results of the computation. (Please provide a detailed tabulation for each
community)

DISCUSSIONS

This activity was done to compare the species abundance and composition in 4
selected plots in tropical forest situated in higher elevation through the application of
Shannon and Simpson formulas. Thus, based on the obtained result above the
community 1 and2 are diverse communities. Diverse because this is based on the
formula that was used, the Simpson 2 or s2 and the Shannon diversity index. In
Simpsons 2 rule, if the result is less than 1 it implies higher diversity, thus the results
community # 1 and 2 are both less than 1 (community 1 =0.073, community 2 = 0.044).
While the Shannon’s rule is, if the result is greater than 1 it also implies a higher
diversity, thus the results of community 1 and 2 are greater than 1 (community 1 = 2.71,
community 2 = 4.595). Further, the community # 3 are also diverse these was based on
the used Simpson 3 or s3 formulas. Based on the results (s3= 26.614) and the s3 rule
the greater the results the diverse the community. Lastly the community # 4 are less
diverse because the results is less than 1(0.886). Based on the s3 rule the lower the
results the lower the diversity.

CONCLUSIONS

Therefore, based on the obtained results and deriving of a certain formula in the
different plots. In the 4 communities/plots, three of it are diverse (community # 1,2, and
3) and one of it is less diverse (community #4). Thus, diverse communities indicate that
the species are suitable to this kind of environments.
