UNIT IV - DISCOVER AUSTRALIA

1° INTRODUCTION
➢ Bristane is an Easter City.
➢ Sydney is in New South Wales, in the South-East of Australia.
➢ Alice Springs is in the center/middle of Australia.
➢ The biggest state is Western Australia.
➢ The smallest one is Victoria.
➢ The most populated city is Melbourne and Hobart is the capital of Tasmania.

2° THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL FLAG


THe Australian National Flag is blue, white and red. On the left, there are :
★ The Union Jack ; it represents the historical link with Great Britain.
★ The Commonwealth Star ; it is a seven-pointed white star : six points symbolizing the
six states and one for the territories.
★ On the right, there is the Southern Cross, it is a group of five white stars representing
the constellation which can be observed in the Southern hemisphere.

N.B Australia has got three official flags :


● The Australian National Flag,
● The Australian Aboriginal Flag and
● the Torres Strait Islander Flag.
In July 1995, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag were recognized by the
Australian government as official flags of Australia.

3° AUSTRALIA’S STATES AND TERRITORIES


Australia is composed of six states and two territories. The name of the capital city is
Craberry. The five largest cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. The
name “Australia” is derived from the latin word “Australis”, meaning “of the south”.
4° A LAND OF RECORDS
➔ Althought it is rich in natural ressources and has got a lot of fertile land, more than
one third (⅓) of Australia is desert. Australia is the smallest continent of all.
➔ It is the largest country without land borders.
➔ It is the most inhabited continent of the world.
➔ The Great Barrier Relief is the biggest coral reef system in the world.
➔ South Wales is the most populated state of Australia.
➔ Australian aborigenous’ culture is the oldest living culture on Earth.
➔ Month Kon is Australia’s highest peak.
➔ Australia is the flattest continent.

5° JAMES COOK

James Cook was born in 1728, in Yorkshire (England).


When he was eighteen, he decided to go to the sea and become a sailor.
The ship which set off from Playmouth was the Endeavor. Some people of the crew wanted
to stay on Tahiti because the natives were friendly !
James Cook landed in the Eastern Coat, which later became “New South Wales”.
James Cook and his crew were the first Europeans to meet natives.
In 1772 and 1776, J. Cook started two other trips in the Pacific.
He died in Hawaii, natives killed him (after a fight) ; 1779.

6° GRAMMAR - LE PASSIF (OU VOIX PASSIVE)


On utilise le passif pour mettre en valeur ce que quelqu’un dit ou quelque chose subit.
Le passif se forme avec l’auxiliaire “be” suivi du participe passé du verbe. Pour les verbes
réguliers, le participe passé se forme en ajoutant la terminaison : “...-ed” au verbe (exemple :
transport -> transportED). Pour les verbes irréguliers, on utilise la forme indiquée dans la
troisième colonne du tableau de conjugaison.

Si on veut préciser par qui l’action est faite, on ajoute un complément d’agent introduit par
“by”. C’est l’auxiliaire “be” qui indiquera le temps présent (AM/IS/ARE), ou bien encore prétérit
(WAS/WERE).

EXEMPLES
❖ ACTIF : A lot of Australians play rugby.
❖ PASSIF : Rugby is played by a lot of Australian.
❖ ACTIF : The British government transported convicts to Australia.
❖ PASSIF : Convicts were transported by the British government.
7° EXCLAMATIVES
Devant un nom : (précédé ou pas d’un adjectif)
-> “What a (strange) land !”

Devant un adjectif :
-> “I am SO exhausted !”
-> “HOW exhausted I am !”

8° THE ABORIGINES

About 50,000 years ago, the aborigines arrived in Australia. They fished and hunted with
boomerangs to live.
They enjoyed music, dancing, singing and art. They invented the didgeridoo (a long wooden
flute). They also painted with their finger, it is called dot-painting.
The “dreamtime” is the aboriginal understanding of the creation of the world : according to
Aboriginals legends, the world at the beginning was completely flat and in darkness.
During the Dreamtime, when life was created, ancestral spirits came to Earth and rceated
rivers, lakes and moutains. They also created animals and people. The Sun rose out of the
ground and the land received light for the first time. THat was when time began.
Today, there are about 600,000 Aborigines. They represent 3% of the Australian population.
Some of them still live in a traditional way, especially outside the cities.
