MODULE DESCRIPTION

This module will introduce high voltage engineering, including high voltage
Introduction generation, mechanism of electrical breakdown, analysis and non-destructive testing
of insulation, and high voltage measurements.

Learning At the end of the module student will be able to:

Outcomes
LO1 : Explain the theory of high voltage generation and its measurements.
LO2 : Evaluate dielectric materials subjected to high voltages in terms of their
breakdown mechanisms.
LO3 : Analyse the methods used in non-destructive testing of insulation material and
insulation coordination.
LO4 : Apply the practical techniques used in generating high voltages, including,
HVAC, HVDC and impulse voltages and the principles of high voltage testing
and measurements.
LO5 : Discuss the safety aspects in handling high voltages.
Assessment During the semester, there will be one mid-term and an End of Semester exam. The
Criteria mid-term test will be based on the tutorial work and the lecture material covered until
the week before it is held. The End of Semester examination will be a comprehensive
exam based on the lecture materials covered during the semester.
• Mid-Semester Examination 20 % LO1 – LO2
• Laboratories 20 % LO4 – LO5
• End of Semester Examination 60 % LO1 – LO3, LO5
TOTAL 100 %
Module To pass this module students are required to achieve a minimum pass in both the
Requirement “Continuous Assessments” and the “End of the Semester Examination “components
and achieve an overall mark that would qualify for a “C” grade or above.

Generic Information

Any type of plagiarism is not allowed.

Plagiarism: Academic honesty is crucial to a student’s credibility and self-esteem, and ultimately
reflects the values and morals of the Institute as whole. A student may work together with one or
a group of students discussing assignment content, identifying relevant references, and debating
issues relevant to the subject. Plagiarism occurs when the work of another person, or persons, is
used and presented as one’s own.
