1. SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This method is intended to determine the action of solid or paste organic materials on paint.

It applies to:

- rubbers and plastics,

- pasty or liquid adhesives,

- adhesive films,

- greases,

- etc.

It is used for assessing:

- the behaviour of new paints in the presence of reference organic materials,

- the action of new materials regarding reference paints.

2. PRINCIPLE

Painted metal or plastic test samples, called "receivers", are placed in contact with samples
of organic material, called "donors", then exposed to ultraviolet rays.

The action on the paint, in particular staining and any other change in appearance is
assessed after contact then exposure to light.

3. APPARATUS AND REAGENTS

3.1. INSTRUMENT FOR CUTTING OUT solid organic materials.

3.2. TEMPLATE with window 60 mm x 13 mm and 2 mm thick.

3.3. SPATULA for deposit of greases and/or possibly mastics.

3.4. BRUSH for the application of liquid adhesives.

3.5. BACKING PLATES, , flat 90 mm x 90 mm , and possible overload, such that weight M
of the plate and overload is equal to :

- 500 g ± 5 g for 25 mm x 13 mm samples.

- 1,000 g ± 10 g for 25 mm x 26 mm samples.

3.6. VENTILATED OVEN. set to 85 °C  2°C.

3.7. GREY SCALE for assessing the discharges in compliance with NF EN 20105-A03
standard, with half-degrees.

3.8. MEDIUM PRESSURE MERCURY VAPOUR LAMP POLAMP HGCL14

This lamp is obtained from ATLAS, Z.A. La Barogne - 3, rue des Longues Raies - 77230
Moussy-le-Neuf (see the assembly diagram of the lamp and its emission spectrum in Annex
1)

3.9. ABSORBENT PAPER, lint-free.

3.10. ROOM conditioned to 23 °c ± 2 °c and 50 % ± 5 % relative humidity.

3.11. ETHANOL for analysis.

4. PREPARATION OF TEST PIECES COATED WITH PAINT (RECEIVERS)

Dimensions of test pieces shall be equal to 90 mm +/- 1 mm x 90 mm +/- 1 mm.

To estimate the stain, use the plates ZC090190BLC/R delivered by ETALON.

Other “receivers” may be used following the CDC requirements.

NOTE: For information, these plates are available from ETALON, rue Lavoisier, 77330
OZOIR LA FERRIERE (Tel : 01 60 34 34 70 /Fax : 01 60 28 66 90).

5. OPERATING PROCEDURE

5.1. PLACING THE DONOR IN CONTACT WITH THE RECEIVER

5.1.1. Rubbers and plastics

Cut out samples of 25 mm x 26 mm if possible from the donor material (minimum

dimensions 25mm x 13 mm), by means of the instrument (3.1.). The surface of the donor in
contact with the receiver shall be perfectly plane and parallel to the opposite surface.

Place the donor sample at the centre of the sample receiver. If the material is composite,
ensure that the face of the samples in contact with the paint is the same as on the vehicle.

Cover the sample with a core backing plate suitable for the size of the cut sample (3.5.).

5.1.2. Case of adhesives and greases

Deposit on the test piece of the receiver, either:

- paste adhesive using template (3.2.) and spatula (3.3.),

- the grease, using the template (3.2.) and spatula (3.3.),

- liquid adhesive using brush (3.4.).

In the latest case, leave it to dry for 5 minutes.

5.1.3. Case of film adhesive

Cut out a strip of adhesive film or tape, 12 mm to 15 mm wide and 60 mm  1 mm long and
apply it to the test piece of the receiver.

5.2. OVEN BAKING

Place the donor/receiver assembly in horizontal position in the oven set at 85°C ± 2°C (3.6)
for 70 hr  2hr, then remove the donor/receiver assembly from the oven and leave to cool at
ambient temperature for 30 min  1 min with the additional weights (see § 5.1.1.).

5.3. INTERMEDIATE EXAMINATION

5.3.1. Remove the sample (5.1.1.) or the film (5.1.3.), remove the maximum of the paste
product residue (5.1.2.) while taking care not to damage the paint.

5.3.2. Wipe prints left by the donor on the receiver, using paper (3.9.) and examine them
according to indications in paragraph 6.

5.4. FINAL EXAMINATION AFTER EXPOSURE TO LIGHT

Complete the wiping of prints left by the donor on the receiver using a paper (3.9.) soaked in
solvent (3.11.).

Place the test piece for 22 hr ± 1 hr under the lamp (3.8.) according to conditions defined by
annex 1.

Examine the test piece again according to indications of paragraph 6.

6. PRESENTATION OF RESULTS

6.1. CHANGE IN APPEARANCE

Record the visual estimation of the change in colour of the area in contact

Note the change in brilliance of the area in contact with the donor during the intermediate
test (refer to § 5.3.) and after exposure to light (refer to § 5.4.) according to test method D25
1413.

Record the visual estimation of the possible swelling of paint due to migration.

6.2. STAINING

Record the staining before and after exposure to the lamp (3.8.) (see §5.3 and §5.4.) Make
the distinction between "staining by contact", limited to the area in contact with the donor and
"staining by lateral migration" at the periphery of this area. Assess the staining by contact
between the stained and unstained areas, by means of the grey scale (3.7.) according to the
Test Method D15 1343. Staining may also be assessed as a colorimetric variation, according
to Test Method D17 2023.

7. TEST REPORT

In addition to the results obtained, the test report must include:

- the reference of this test method,

- the type and reference of the donor, as well as the Supplier's name,

- the reference of the receiver, paint range as well as the Supplier's name,
