Activity 1
Building Wiring (Part I)

Objective:
1. To familiarize the schematic diagram and uses of basic wiring devices (single way,
three way and four - way switch).
2. To fully understand the function of those wiring devices in a lighting circuit.
3. To perform proper wiring and termination using the appropriate wiring devices on
each lighting circuit.

Materials:
1. Wire / Cable 3. Building wiring training
2. Wiring devices board
a) Single way switch 4. Electrical Tape
b) Three - way switch 5. Light Bulb
c) Four – way switch

Tolls and Instruments:

1. Set of Pliers
2. Screw driver
3. Multi - Tester

Procedure:
1. Given the following diagram, determine the number of wires (excluding the
grounding wire) must be pulled on each conduit.
2. Draw the schematic diagram and describe the function of each lighting circuit.
Diagram 1:

Description: The Diagram Shows three light bulb that controlled in a single plate, 3 gang at the same
location. Lights a, b, and c are controlled separately using single way switch.
Schematic Diagram:
Diagram 2:

Description: Based on the given conduit layout, the neutral wire is connected to controls a, b and c. On
the other hand, the line wire will be connected to the 3-gang three way switch closest to the circuit
breaker, named as 3WSabc. Each pair of traveller will then be connected to the other pairs of traveller
on the other 3-gang three way switch farther from the circuit breaker. This switch holds the control
connection of each light bulbs a, b and c. Looking at the conduit pipe from circuit breaker to control a,
there will be 2 wires to be pulled, the line and neutral wires. Next, from control a to b, there will be 8
wires to be pulled, including the three pairs of travellers, the control a and the neutral wire. Next, from
control b to c, 9 wires are needed to be pulled. The three pairs of travellers, the neutral wire and the
controls a and b. Lastly, from control c to switch 3WSabc, there will be 9 wires to be pulled from the
three pairs of travellers and the three control wires from a, b and c.
Schematic Diagram:
Diagram 3:

Description: The diagram shows three light bulbs that will be controlled at three different locations.
Both lights a and light b will be controlled at those three locations by using 2 three-way switch and 1
four-way switch. While light c will only be controlled at one location using single way switch. At location
1, the one that is nearest to the source is a single plate 2 gang, at location2, single plate 2 gang, and in
location three single plate 3 gang.
Diagram 4: LOAD OF THE LIGHTING CIRCUIT (Bulb a, Bulb b, Bulb c and Exhaust Fan)

Description: The diagram shows three light bulbs that will be controlled at two different locations
and an exhaust fan to be controlled together with light c. Light a will be controlled using a single way
switch at location 1, the one that is near to the source. Light b will be controlled at two different
locations (locations 1 &2) using 2 three-way switch. Light c and the exhaust fan will be controlled at the
same time at location 2 using a single way switch. At location 1 is a single plate 2 gang and in location 2
is a single plate 2 gang as well.
Schematic Diagram:
Diagram 5: LOAD OF THE LIGHTING CIRCUIT (Bulb a, Bulb b, Bulb c and Emergency Light)

Description: Based on the given conduit layout, the neutral wire is connected to controls a, b and c as
well as the emergency light. On the other hand, the line wire will be connected to the 2-gang three way
switch closest to the circuit breaker, named as 3WSbc and also to the emergency light and the switch a.
Each pair of traveller will then be connected to the other pairs of traveller on the other 2-gang three
way switch farther from the circuit breaker. This switch holds the control connection of each light bulbs
a, b and c. Considering the conduit pipe from the circuit breaker to control a, only 2 wires will be pulled
namely the neutral and the line wires. From control a to 3WSbc, 5 wires are required to be pulled: pair
of travellers from switches a and b and the line wire. From control a to b, 7 wires will be pulled including
the pairs of travellers from switches b and c, the line and the neutral wires and the control wire of a. For
the conduit pipe from control b to the emergency light, 2 wires are needed to be pulled namely the
neutral and the line wires. Next, from control b to c, 8 wires are needed to be pulled. The two pairs of
the travellers from switches b and c, controls a and b, the line wire and the neutral wire. Lastly, from
control c to switch a and 3WSbc, there will be 3 wires to be pulled from controls a, b and c.

Schematic Diagram:
Diagram 6:

Description: The diagram shows three light bulbs that will be controlled at four different locations.
Light a, b , and c are controlled at for different location using Three way switch ,4 way switch and also
the Emergency light. From the Single plate, 3 gang having 3 three- way switch located nearest to the
source we use travellers to connect to the other location in single plate, 3 gang having 3 Four-way switch
and then connected to other location in a single plate. 3 gang having 3 three-way switch. And By the use
of emergency light we can control a, b and c.
