Course Description 課程大綱:
Chinese 3 is a third year course built upon the foundation of Chinese 2. The teaching goes beyond the
intermediate level in each of the four language skills. The course focuses on 1) authentic conversations in
different daily contexts, 2) reading texts with more complex Chinese characters as well as reading short
stories, 3) Chinese traditional proverbs will be introduced and discussed, 4) writing sentences with broader
vocabulary and more complex grammar, and 5) more in-depth understanding and appreciation of Chinese
culture and lifestyles. The classes are enhanced with audio-visual aids, games, songs, short films, and
festival celebrations. Language lab will be used as an integral part of the curriculum to strengthen students’
learning.

Integrated Chinese (Level 1, Part 2, 3rd Edition) 中文听说读写,published by Cheng & Shui Company
* Both traditional and simplified characters textbooks are available for students to choose from. However, you are only required
to learn one set of characters. The teacher will introduce both in class.

What you need to bring to class 課堂用品:


1. Textbook (Please do not mark on your book.)
2. A notebook for Bell Work
3. A binder to keep all class materials and homework (Please design the front cover including your
Chinese name, 中文三,張老師/张老师 (zhang laoshi),due on the Monday of the second week)
4. At least two pencils
5. $2.00 for classroom supplies, festival celebrations, and class auction gifts

Homework 功課
* Most of the homework (except bell work) will be posted on class website. If you miss any homework,
please print it from the website. In order to cut copy expenses, no extra homework sheets will be given.

1. Bell Work—due at the end of each bell work session


2. Homework---due on every Wednesday
---late submission will result in a deduction of 10% from the assigned points for each day
late and receive no stamps
---a week-late assignment will receive a zero and your parent will be notified
Quizzes and Tests 考試
1. All quizzes/tests will be given on Wednesdays unless notified by the teacher. (one quiz or test each
week)
2. Make up quizzes will be at 6:45am (Athens) of the day the teacher is available
3. No quiz retake

Stamp Systems 章的制度


Throughout the semester, you will have to collect stamps for your class participation, extra credits, or
redeeming for prizes. For each marking period, you will need to turn in 25 stamps for full participation
and for each semester, 20 stamps maximum can be used for extra credits. At the end of each semester a
class auction will be held for you to redeem prizes for any leftover stamps.

How You Earn Stamps (章)


1. Completing bell work sheet (+1 stamp)
2. Turning in homework sheet on time (in the beginning of the class on the due date) (+1 stamp)
3. Getting 100% on your homework grade (+1 stamp)
4. Getting 100% on your Quiz or Test (+1 stamp)
5. Being the class leader 班長 (ban zhang) (+6 stamps)
6. Participating in-class or out of class competition or special programs. (up to 20 stamps)

How You Lose Stamps (章)


1. Being Tardy without an excuse (if comes in after the final bell or not in your seat when the bell
finishes ringing) (-1 stamp)
2. Eating food including chewing gums in class (-2 stamps + food being taken away). If you do have to
eat, please get my permission, step out of the classroom, and come in after you finish.
3. Using electronic devices in class without my permission (-2 stamps + device being taken away)
4. Disturb the class (-1 stamp)
5. Laying a foot up a table or a chair (-5 stamps)
6. Leaving your trash in the room (-1 stamp for each piece of trash)
7. Stepping out the room before the final bell ring (-1 stamp)

Things You Should Never Do 絕對避免 之事


1. Cheating on quizzes or tests (get a zero grade and a Saturday detention)
2. Copying someone’s homework or have someone to do homework for you (both the lender and
borrower get a zero grade)
