Foreword
The descriptions and service procedures contained in this manual are based on designs
and methods studies carried out up to January 05.

The products are under continuous development. Vehicles and components produced
after the above date may therefore have different specifications and repair methods.
When this is judged to have a significant bearing on this manual, supplementary service
bulletins will be issued to cover the changes.

The new edition of this manual will update the changes.

In service procedures where the title incorporates an operation number, this is a
reference to V.S.T. (Volvo Standard Times).

Service procedures which do not include an operation number in the title are for general
information and no reference is made to V.S.T.

The following levels of observations, cautions and warnings are used in this Service
Documentation:

Note: Indicates a procedure, practice, or condition that must be followed in order to have
the vehicle or component function in the manner intended.

Caution: Indicates an unsafe practice where damage to the product could occur.
Warning: Indicates an unsafe practice where personal injury or severe damage to the
product could occur.

Danger: Indicates an unsafe practice where serious personal injury or death could occur.

MID 130: Gearbox control unit

MID 130 PID 124 Oil level, gearbox

General information
The oil level sensor is integrated with the temperature
sensor MID 130 PID 177. A float moves on the outside of
the sensor which has a switch. The switch contacts close
when the oil level is sufficient. The control unit supplies
the sensor with a voltage across the contacts and detects
any short circuits.

If the resistance is measured and is found to be infinite

the control unit cannot decide whether the oil level is low
or if there is a break in the sensor circuit.
Component: (B10) Sensor, oil level

Cable harness: 1494, 1007C

Fault code

Data applicable, but below normal operating range.
Conditions for fault code:

• When the engine speed = 0 with the engine running

and oil temperature > 30 C the sensor signals open
contact.

Possible cause:

• Oil level too low.

• Open-circuit in the sensor circuit.

Reaction from the control unit:

• Fault code is stored.

• Red light is requested.

Noticeable external symptoms:

T4019266 • Red light comes on.

Appropriate check:

MID 130 PID 127 Oil pressure, gearbox

General information
There is an on/off pressure switch in the oil pan. The
contact is open when the pressure is OK. An open
contact can also mean an open circuit. Before the engine
is started, the sensor must have a closed circuit. After
starting, the contact can remain closed. The oil pump has
low capacity at low engine speeds. If the PID 190 (engine
speed) indicates a fault, the fault code for lubrication oil
pressure is not stored.

MID 222 SID 2 PWM valve, retarder

General information
Note: Pulse width modulation (PWM) valves are only
fitted on gearboxes with retarders.

Open-circuits in the pulse width modulated (PWM) valve

circuit can only be diagnosed in pairs. When a pulse
width modulation (PWM) valve pair is not fully installed, a
bridge has to be installed to detect an open-circuit. In the
event of FMI 5, both the SID/PSID numbers are displayed.
The fault is then measured via the cable harness in the
usual way.
