Causality and DNG metamaterials

Dr. Saughar Jarchi 3

A homogenous A paradox in the

nondispersive DNG medium time domain
& NIR

The wave reaches more

distant points first
Dr. Saughar Jarchi 4

Realistic DNG metamaterials

must be dispersive

How does one reconcile the

CW NIR of a dispersive DNG
medium with causal pule
propagation?
Dr. Saughar Jarchi 5

Studying a one-dimensional electromagnetic of a

pulsed source in a DNG medium.

The source is driven by an excitation pulse

that is based on a sinusoidal and a smooth
envelope.

FDTD method
is applied
Dr. Saughar Jarchi 6

The expected causal propagation

&NIR effects are observed.

DNG metamaterials and the associated NIR resulta

are physical and the simulation results are
consistant with the wave propagation physics.

1-D FDTD simulation

Dr. Saughar Jarchi 8

An electric current plane wave source is located in the

plane z=0, at the center of a very large DNG slab.

Lossy Drude polarization & magnetization models are used.

Time dependence: exp(-jwt)

The fronts of the signal arrive causally at the

observation points

The CW portion of the pulse observed at the

more distant point 2, occur earlier in time than
at the point 1.
