The Earth rotates on its axis, an imaginary line that runs through the
center of the planet, through the North and South poles. The axis is
the Earth's center of gravity, around which it rotates. Though spinning
at 1,000 miles per hour, the Earth takes 24 hours to make a complete
rotation. The earth requires 24 hours for one rotation. The Sun rises
from the east and sets in the west. This apparent movement is caused
by rotation of earth from west to east. The earth is divided into 360 °
(360 Degrees). These 360 imaginary vertical lines are called
longitudes. (Longitude is the angular distance of a place east or west of the
meridian at Greenwich, England. It is represented in degrees.)

Q. No. 1 : If 24 hours are required for one rotation that is 360 ° (Degrees). In one hour how
many longitudes can be covered?

A. 360/24 =15 Degrees

B. 24/360 = 0.067 Degrees

Q. No. 2 : If earth requires 24 hours to rotate 360 Degrees (that is to cover 360 longitudes),
in 4 minutes how many longitudes can be covered?

A. 360 4 1440

-------- x = ---------- = 1° (1 Degree)

24 x 60 1440

B. 360 4 1440

-------- x = ------------ = 60 ° (60 Degrees)

Q. No. 3: Observe the longitudinal extent of
India. If we have to select the central
longitude (Central Meridian of India or
Standard Meridian of India), what is the
correct option or options?

(Note: 1 Degree = 60 minutes;

1 minute = 60 seconds)

97 - 68

A. ------- = 14.5 Degree E i.e. 14° 30’ E

97 – 68

B. -------- = 14.5; 97 - 14.5 = 82.5 =82° 30’ E

97 - 68

C. -------- = 14.5; 68 + 14.5 = 82.5 =82° 30’ E

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) marks
the starting point of every time zone
in the World and longitude passing
through respective country are used
for representation of time. India
adopted 82°30'E as standard
meridian. The time at this meridian
calculated with respect to GMT is
called Indian Standard Time. The
time difference between GMT & IST
is 5.30 Hours. Based on the notes
and map, choose the correct options
to Question No. 4 to 10.

Q. No. 4: What is the time difference between New Delhi (28°39′07″ N, 77°13′53″ E) and
London (51°30′30″ N, 0°07′32″ W) ?

A. New Delhi is 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of London

B. New Delhi is 5 hours 30 minutes behind London

C. New Delhi is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of London

Q. No. 5: What is the time difference between New Delhi (28°39′07″ N, 77°13′53″ E) Tokyo
(35°41′22″ N, 139°41′30″ E) ?

A. New Delhi is 3 hours 30 minutes behind Tokyo

B. New Delhi 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of Tokyo

Q. No. 6: Indian Standard time is the time observed throughout India and Sri lanka, and
GMT or Greenwich Mean Time is the clock time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich,
London. Indian Standard Time is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

True or False?

A. True
B. False
Q. No. 7: What is the time difference between IST and GMT?

A. IST is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT

B. IST is 6 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT

Q. No. 8: What is the time difference between Dubai and Greenwich Mean Time?

A. Dubai is 4 hours ahead of GMT

B. Dubai is 4 hours behind GMT

Q. No. 9: What is the time difference between India and Dubai?

A. Indian time is 1 hour 30 minutes ahead of Dubai

B. Indian time is 1 hour 30 minutes behind Dubai

Q. No. 10: Canada has 6 different standard times. True or False?

A. True. Canada’s longitudinal extend is from 52° W to 141° W.

B. False: Canada has only one standard time. Since the longitudinal extend of Canada
is very less.
