JOSE P. Rizal is one of the forerunners of the propaganda movement that awakened the Filipino
people from the abuses of the Spanish colonizers, said Raymond Basilio, a history teacher for
three years in a school in Bukidnon. He added that Jose Rizal served as the mouthpiece of the
injustices and grave human rights violations the Filipino people went through during the
Spanish rule.

“He provided venue for the people to air out their sentiments against the malpractices of the
Spaniards,” he added.

Basilio said because of Rizal's writings, the Filipinos realized fully their situation and it sparked
the 1896 Philippine Revolution.

He added that Jose Rizal served as one of the inspirations of Andres Bonifacio in their struggle
against colonial powers.

“He is an inspiration to Bonifacio—the ideas of Rizal helped him come up with a holistic
approach toward the unjust and detestable situation,” said Basilio.

Basilio said the brilliance of Rizal helped Bonifacio see the bigger picture of the country during
the Spanish colonialization.

And it also inspired Bonifacio to participate in La Liga Filipina in order to propagate their ideals
to the people, and understand further their situation.

Second propaganda movement

Rizal’s fervor in exposing injustices and oppression should be an inspiration to the Filipino youth
in the present days, said Gabrielle Marie Canda, an officer of the League of Filipino Students in
Lanao (LFS-Lanao).
Canda said the propaganda movement during the Spanish era is the first propaganda
movement that is nationalist in nature.

“It is a nationalist movement because it seeks to liberate the Filipino people from Spain,” she
said.

However, Canda said there is a second propaganda movement—a nationalist-democratic

propaganda movement that started during the time of Senator Claro Mayo Recto in 1960s.

On why it is a nationalist and democratic propaganda movement, Canda said the second
propaganda movement is aimed at liberating the Philippines from the indirect colonization of
the United States.

She added that it is democratic in a sense that it seeks to give the land back to the tillers that
comprises the majority of the Filipino people.

Canda said the second propaganda movement is just a continuation of the propaganda
movement that includes Jose Rizal.

Educate

“The second propaganda movement is a political movement,” Canda said adding that it is a
movement that educates people with a political goal.

Canda added that there is no type of education that is separated from politics.

All types of education shape the culture of the people that has a bearing in politics.

She added the second propaganda moment also seeks to achieve change in the society, and it
should start with a specific political standpoint.

This standpoint is a product of the oppression and injustices that is prevalent in our in the
society today.
Like the propaganda movement during the Spanish era, Canda said the propaganda should
come from the people and should address the yearning of the Filipino people.
