Subject: English /Literacy Activity: Picture and Initial sound matching

Learning Intention: To recognise similarities and differences between pictures and words.

Teaching Strategies (differentiation of activity):

1. All students will look at, reach out to touch and interact with the resource when placed in close
proximity to it.

2. Most students will make attempts to match pictures.

3. Some students will identify and match the initial sound of a given word.

Description of activity:

Adult to show student pictures introducing the words as they show them.

An adult will model matching and individual picture to the same picture on the picture grid. Students will
then be supported to match pictures independently or with physical and/or verbal prompts.

Adult to model identifying and matching the first sounds of words related to the story, for example –
match the letter ‘J’ to the word Jack, match the letter ‘c’ to the word cow.
Students will then be encouraged to complete this activity independently or with physical and verbal
prompts.

Adult to read sentence to student ‘The boy is Jack’. Then with verbal and/or physical prompts the student
is to trace over the sentence using a pencil or texta. The second space is for the student to copy the
sentence, again with verbal and/or physical prompts. The third space is for the student to use the words
from the additional sheet and cut out and glue the words in the correct order to match the original
sentence.
