ACTIVITY 1: Review Questions on the Introduction to Ethics

Directions:
A. Read and analyze the scanned/printed handout provided for “Chapter 5: Introduction to
Ethics”.
B. Answer the questions below:

1. Define Ethics?

Ethics is moral principles or values in which it would guide you on the things you should
do and should not do. It is also a study of rightness and wrongness of human actions. But
based on our personal ethics we have different point of view it depends on our personal
characteristics on where we will stand.

2. What is the basic purpose of a code of ethics for a profession?

The basic purpose of the code of ethics for a profession is to guide professionals by
providing them guidelines and set of common ethical standards to maintain their attitude
and consistency in their behaviors. Just like a code of ethics in the business area.

3. Name and explain the characteristics and values associated with ethical behavior.

The characteristics and value that most people associate with ethical behaviors are:

Integrity- The quality of having a strong moral principles, upright, honorable and doing
right things in any circumstances and not a two faced kind of person.

Honesty- Telling all the truth and act truthfully.

Trustworthiness and Promise Keeping- A person who is reliable and keep the promises
with full of commitment.

Loyalty- A person that is faithful in supporting a person or an institution.

Fairness and Openness –


A characteristic of being neutral that is not bias and open for correction if ever
committed an error.

Caring for others- To show care kindness to others by taking good care and helping those
in need selflessly.
Respect for others - to respect the right of other people and the how they want their lives
to be.

Responsible citizens- To obey law and regulations and exercising your rights as a person
just like expressing your opinions and respect the democratic process.

Pursuit of Excellence-
To show the best things you can do. And perform it with full of passion and dedication.

Accountability- By being accountable in all assigned responsibilities and handle it


properly.

4. Why is ethical behavior necessary?

Ethical behavior is necessary for us to act and function in an orderly manner. To guide us
on how we should properly act and avoid things that might end up causing damage to us
and to the organization. Like for example we do follow laws because we are afraid of
punishment by this thinking we well have a harmony in a workplace because we are
afraid of committing evil because of the consequence that we might get. And it will result
to a positive outcome.

5. What are some reasons why people act unethically?

The reason why people act unethically because of first his standards might be different
from your because we do have different set of belief and ideas it depend on our views in
life, and we can’t let people think the same on how we think. Second the person choose
to act selfishly, all he/she think is for his own good ignoring other people as long as she/
he is satisfied on what he gets.

6. Describe some principles and or values that are related to


a. Personal Ethics
-It is an individual judgment on what is right or wrong. Some principles are basic justice
and fairness that will solely come from your decisions, Concern for the right of others
when he/she shows care to other and well being on the benefit of others, respect for the
right of others. By being trustworthiness and honest to all your action and following the
law in an institution and avoid committing mistakes that’s against the law.

b. Professional Ethics
It has a common set of standards in line with your profession and you need to follow it.
Just like showing integrity, impartiality and objectivity in all circumstances that you will be
into. Professional competence and professional behavior on the way you will act and
handle things in making decision and actions. By being confidential in all information you
have and not telling anyone because it might destroy your image and have a
misinterpretation or etc. And avoidance of potential or apparent conflict of interest that
will lead to a misunderstanding and a negative impact the institutions.
c. Business Ethics
The some principles of business ethics are to have a fair competition with other business
enterprise. Global as well as domestic justices which enable them to a right and fair
treatment to all .Social Responsibilities give help to those in need like street children by
having a charitable project to them and etc. Concern for environment by have projects
that is eco-friendly which will not destroy our mother nature by the waste your business
is promoting.

7. Why is ethical behavior necessary in the practice of one’s profession?


It is really necessary in practice of one’s profession because it would serve as their
guidelines on what is the appropriate act that they should do and avoid act that might
make them unprofessional. It will also enhance their profession by serving the public
since they have enough knowledge on how to deal with it. They follow rules based on
their profession and not mixed with a personal interest. For me that is really what makes
ethical behavior necessary.
