Subject: Trip Report of Psychiatry Conference

I attended to a Psychiatry Conference on February 19, 2021 held remotely via Zoom.
The meeting convened at 7:30pm and adjourned at 8:50pm. This conference was for all
the members of O Shadowing Puerto Rico, Doctor Caroline Toro-Ruiz was who
exposed this conference. The objective was to inform the audience about Psychiatry.

Process to study Psychiatry

In the conference the doctor talked that the Psychiatry is the medical specialty that
studies the illnesses. The conference allowed to the audience know about the process
that you can follow to study this field of medicine. First you have to complete the
requirements to apply to a Medical University and be accepted. The student has the
opportunity to rotate in the different branch of the medicine to help they choose the area
of interesting. Second complete the process of the standardized test step 1 and step 2
begins. These two tests prepared the students for the next process step 3, with this result
they are able to being the specialization. In the case of the doctor, she studied at the San
Juan Bautista Medical School and the Veteran’s hospital to complete her specialization
degree. One point that she emphasized is that there are other Medical School that permit
complete this specialization like the Medical Sciences Enclosure of the UPR and other
university in the United States.

Professional skills tasks of a psychiatrist

They are able to be visiting mental hospital and diagnosticate patient that present some
symptoms of mental illness. They have the tasks to determinate the correct treatment for
the patients that they diagnosticate. The psychiatrist can offer the patient therapies in
their personal office. The tasks of the psychiatry are variables all the time when they
work.

Closing

The conference gives pre-med students the choice to know about more professional
areas in the medicine. Also show the process that implicate the study with emphasis in
mental health and show another opportunity in this branch of medicine.
