CHEM 1451 Study Guide and Learning Objectives

Chapter 4 Chemical Reactions

After completing your study of this Chapter, you should be able to do the following objectives.

Section 4-1 Mole

1. Understand the concept of the mole for counting in chemistry.
2. Use Avogadro’s constant to determine the number of moles from a given number of atoms (or molecules or
formula units) and vice versa.

Section 4-2 Molar Mass

1. Understand the concept of molar mass.
2. Use molar mass to determine the number of moles from a given mass of elements (or compounds) and vice versa.
3. Use Avogadro’s constant and molar mass together to determine the number of atoms (or molecules or formula
units) from a given amount of elements (or compounds) and vice versa.

Section 4-3 Chemical Reaction and Chemical Equation

1. Translate an observation (a chemical reaction described in plain English) into a balanced chemical equation.
2. Balance an unbalanced chemical equation.

Section 4-4 Stoichiometry Problem

1. Use mole-to-mole relationships to solve reaction stoichiometry problems: Calculate the amount of one reactant or
product from the amount of another reactant or product by using mole-to-mole ratios derived from a balanced
chemical equation.

Section 4-5 Reduction-Oxidation Reactions

1. Know the definition of redox reactions.
2. Identify which substance is oxidized and which substance is reduced in a redox reaction.
3. Identify what the oxidizing agent is and what the reducing agent is in a redox reaction.
4. Write the chemical equation for a combustion reaction.
