After going through this lesson, you are expected to evaluate narratives based on how the
author developed the elements, character and setting (heroes and villains)
Reading good stories will enhance your knowledge and literacy skills, spark imagination
and will stimulate your curiosity. Without these elements, (character and setting) stories would not
be great and reading would not be fun.

The Setting of the story refers to the geographic location (places or scene) and time within a
narrative. It makes the story vivid and interesting. Usually, the setting is not said directly, instead,
clues are given for the readers to infer. Setting is the time and place (or when and where) of the
story.

Read and understand the given example of setting in a story:


As the sun set in the horizon, Jim fixed his things and slowly walked his way home. It was dark
and silent. At a distance, he could see his father peeping at the window waiting for someone.
Father came home from the city where he is currently working. Though it was lonely at times for Jim
missing his father, seeing him home once a month makes him happy.

Characters are an important element in short stories because they drive the story as a
whole. Characters who created tension or trouble that would lead to problem/conflict marked as
bad guy is the antagonist or villain. Those characters who portray the role of good guy are the
heroes or the protagonist. Without these two types of characters, narrative would not turn
interesting. Characters can be evaluated through their personal qualities and traits.

Read and understand the given example of characters in a story:


Jazz was alone at home when someone knocked at the door. Jumping up from her seat,
she ran to open the door. “Do you have internet connection?” asked the stranger. Jazz was scared
and nervous. She was actually expecting her mother at the door. She wanted to shut the door but
it was too late. The stranger was so rude that he had already pushed her inside the house

DAY 2

Don Juan and his wife Namongan lived in Nalbuan, now part of La Union in the Northern
part of the Philippines. They had a son named Lam-ang. Before Lam ang was born, Don Juan
went to the mountains in order to punish a group of their Igorot enemies. While he was away, his
son Lam-ang was born. It took four people to help Namongan give birth.
As soon as Lam-ang was born, he spoke. He named himself and chose his godparents. At
nine months, he decided he would go and look for his father. During his exhausting journey, he
rested for a while. He fell asleep and had a bad dream about his father's head being stuck on a
pole by the Igorot.

Directions: Evaluate the setting of a narrative and answer the questions below.

Lam-ang was furious when he learned what had happened to his father. He
rushed to the enemies’ village and killed them all, except for one whom he let go so
that he could tell other people about his greatness. Upon returning to Nalbuan in
triumph, he was bathed by women in the Amburayan river. All the fish died because of
the dirt and odor from Lam-ang's body.
Meanwhile, on the next village, there lived a beautiful young woman named
Ines Kannoyan whom Lam-ang wanted to woo. He visited her and brought along with
him his white rooster and gray dog. On his way, he met his enemy Sumarang, one of
Ines’ suitor whom he fought once. Lam-ang found Ines’ house. It was surrounded by
many suitors who brought something with them trying to catch Ines’ attention.

SAHJID BULIG THE BOY HERO


DAY 3

On July 2, 1993, the Feast of Krus ng Wawa was celebrated in honor of the Holy Cross.
Hundreds of devotees joined the religious fluvial procession as the town’s tradition. They were
on board on a decorated barge “ PAGODA”.
As the town people celebrated the festivities, fireworks flamed in the sky
overwhelmed the joy of the viewers. One of the baby rocket (kwitis) fell across the corner of
the Pagoda barge where devotees stayed. All the people boarded panicked and force to
move together on one side of the barge. Overloaded capacity force the barge to tilt. It
collapsed and gradually sank to the river bed. Knowing the incident, Sahjid Bulig a thirteen
year old boy rush to the shore and made a quick response. He jumped into the water to save
a little girl. He brought her ashore and left her safely. For the six times he swam back and
forth, he was able to save six small children.
On the seventh time of his rescue, the tip of the wooden cross of the sinking Pagoda
fell on him. He was unconscious and got drowned.
In the morning after the incident, Sahjid Bulig was found dead together with more
than 200 devotees. It was a day of mourning for the people of Bocaue. For them, this little
boy was a hero.

Year 1521, in the Island of Mactan, a stranger came named Magellan. He was sent by

was in deep anger and resists to pay, and stand firm on his decision. Magellan with his
disappointment, prepared his men to fight against Lapu-lapu. Soon the battle begun. The
peaceful Mactan waters became warlike sight and turned red. Magellan’s men fell lifeless

Ang anumang gawain kapag ginagamitan ng pagkamalikhain ay nagpapayaman ng
sariling kakayahan. Ito rin ay may kabutihang naidudulot hindi lamang sa sarili kundi maging sa
ating sariling pamayanang kinabibilangan at sa atingbansa.

Ang Pagiging Malikhain at Epekto Nito sa Paggawa ng Anumang Proyekto

Ang pagkamalikhain ay ang kakayahang bumuo ng mga bagay na hindi pa naisip


ng iba o paunlarin ang mga bagay na naimbento na. Upang paunlarin ang ating pus-
pusang paggawa at pagkamalikhain, dapat na bigyang-diin ito ng pamilya, paaralan, at
pamahalaan. Dapat na sa simula pa lang, ang pamilya at paaralan ay kapuwa linangin na
ang mga pagpapahalagang ito sa bawat miyembro at mag-aaral. Ang pamahalaan ay
dapat magbigay ng pagkakataon sa mga may kakayahan na gamitin ito ng malaya upang
makatulong sa kalagayang pangkabuhayan ng bansa. Ito ay magagawa ng pamahalaan
sa pamamagitan ng mga batas, programa, at sistema na dapat itayo para sa malayang
pagkilos ng lahat.
Ang bawat tao na nagnanais iangat ang kaniyang kalagayan sa pamamagitan ng
paggawa ay kailangang maging mapag-imbento, may kakayahang sumubok ng mga
bagong bagay at may mayamang imahinasyon. Ang praktikal niyang kabatiran ang daan
upang magkaroon siya ng mga bagong kaisipan at imbensyon na magagamit niya sa
paglilingkod sa iba.
Ang pagiging malikhain ay makatutulong sa pagtuklas ng bagong solusyon sa mga
suliranin, pansarili o panlipunan man ito. Kung hindi dahil sa mga malikhaing paggawa ng
mga tao, hindi matatamo ng lipunan ang kaginhawaan at kaunlaran. Upang makilala ang
taong malikhain, narito ang kanyang mga katangian.

1. Orihinal. Ang taong malikhain ay totoo sa kanyang nililikha. Hindi ito bunga ng
panggagaya.
2. Mayaman sa idea. Ang Pilipino ay mapangarapin sa buhay. Ginagamit niya ang kaniyang
mga pangarap upang mapayaman ang kaniyang idea sa bisa ng pananaliksik, pagsubok
at matagalang pagsisikap.
3. Madaling makibagay at iangkop ang sarili sa iba’t ibang pagkakataon. Ito ang kodigo ng
malikhaing Pilipino. Kayang-kaya niyang iangat ang kaniyang sarili sa anumang mukha ng
buhay na siyang nagpapayaman ng kanyang pagiging malikhain.
4. Sensitibo sa mga kakulangan sa kapaligiran. Madali para sa isang taong malikhain na
bigyan ng solusyon ang mga kakulangan. Nakagagawa siya ng paraan sa pamamagitan
ng paggamit sa mga lumang bagay na nasa paligid.
5. Nakatayo sa sariling desisyon. Ang taong malikhain ay may kakayahang magpamalas ng
kaniyang paninindigan. Ito ay nakikita sa kaniyang kawilihang pumili ng mga desisyong
naiiba sa karaniwang opinyon at tumuklas ng mga bagay na hindi pa nararating ng isip ng
ibang tao.
6. Malakas na motibasyon upang magtagumpay. Ang taong malikhain ay masigasig sa
paggawa ng kaniyang proyekto kahit na dumaranas siya ng hirap. Matatag siya at malakas
ang loob na harapin ang kinalabasan ng kaniyang malikhaing proyekto kahit pa ito ay kakaiba
kaysa sa karamihan o hindi katanggap-tanggap sa iba.

Ano nga ba ang kahulugan ng sariling karanasan?


Ang sariling karanasan ay sitwasyon kung saan ikaw mismo ay nakaranas ng bagay na

tinutukoy. O kaya ay pinagdaanan mo talaga ang bagay na tinutukoy at hindi batay sa


imahinasyon lamang o sa buhay ng ibang tao.
Mayroong mga karanasan na maihahalintulad natin sa ating nabasa sa iba’t ibang uri ng
babasahin. Paano nga ba maiuugnay ang ating binasa sa ating sariling karanasan?

Basahin natin ang kuwento ng isang batang kahanga-hanga ang katapatan sa kabila ng
kahirapan.

Sa pag-ugnay ng binasa sa sariling karanasan, maisasagawa mo ito kung naunawaan ang


kuwento o tekstong binasa at maihahalintulad mo ang mga pangyayaring naganap sa iyong
sariling karanasan.

Mahalaga, kung gayon, ang pagkakaroon ng sensitibong kamalayan o pagiging mulat sa


mga pangyayaring ating mararanasan upang maibalita natin nang tama at may sapat na
detalye ang ating mga nasaksihan.

DAY 2

Ang Pakikipagkapwa Tao

May kasabihang “Madaling maging tao ngunit mahirap ang magpakatao.” Malalim ang
kahulugan ng pangungusap na ito. Ang pagpapakatao ay sumasaklaw sa lahat ng bagay na
may kinalaman sa ating pakikihalubilo sa ting kapwa.
Sa pamamagitan ng pakikipagkapwa-tao, nakikilala natin ang katauhan ng isang nilalang.
Walang taong mabubuhay na mag-isa sa mundo. Kailangan nating isaisip na tayo’y nabubuhay
sa daigdig hindi para lamang sa ating sarili. Kailangang sikaping magkaroon ng mabuting
pakikipagpalagayan sa ating kapwa. Iwasan ang mga bagay na makakasakit sa damdamin kung
ibig nating magkaroon ng maraming kaibigan. Iwasan ang mahahalay na pananalita.
Ang taong palapintas at mapanira sa kapwa ay hindi kinalulugdan, manapa’y nilalayuan.
Ang taong mapagbuhat ng sariling bangko at may hangin sa ulo ay kinayayamutan. Ang
marunong makipagkapwa-tao ay dinadamayan sa anumang kagipitan at pangangailangan.
Hindi siya matitiis na makitang nasa marawal na kalagayan ng mga taong pinakatunguhan niya
nang mabuti.
Walang mawawala sa atin kung pag-ukulan ng masayang ngiti at malugod na bati ang
ating mga kakilala. Hindi mapipingasan ang ating pagkatao kung sila’y kakausapin nang
walang halong kapalaluan kahit na may mataas na katungkulan tayong hinahawakan.
Ang mahusay sa mundo’y talagang ganyan, magbigay at tumanggap. Hindi maaring
tanggap na lamang nang tanggap, panay na pakabig. Ang wika nga’y ang hindi mautusan ay
hindi rin makapag-uutos. Kung ano ang ating gawin sa ating kapwa ay ganoon din ang
igaganti sa atin ng kapalaran.
Magiging maligaya at tiwasay ang ating pamumuhay kung alam nating walang
nagagalit sa atin. Ang payapang buhay ay hinahangad ng lahat. Bakit hindi natin ito
makakamit? Ang lihim ay ang mabuting pakikipagkapwa-tao. Sa ating sariling mga kamay
nakasalalay ang ating kaligayahang pinapangarap

“Isang linggo na lang daw ang bukas ng pabrika, mahina na ang produksiyon at
magsasara na muna ito habang hindi pa natatapos ang pandemya,” wika ni Mang Arnel.
“Paano kaya ito? Mauubos na rin ang ating naipon, hindi naman tayo nakasama sa

In this lesson, you will learn how to safely use the simple machines and demonstrate safety
measures to prevent accidents with machines. Also, you will understand the uses and description

Machines will help you make your tasks easier and quicker. Moreover, accidents may
happen when machines break down or when used improperly. You can get cut by sharp tools.
They may also tumble off your bikes or even get injured when operating simple machines.
What are simple machines? Simple machines are machines that have been used since
ancient times. These have been developed to make work lighter and less difficult.
There are six simple machines, namely: lever, wheel and axle, inclined plane, wedge,
screw, and pulley. Each simple machine has its own use and has different functions. These will
help you do work in many ways. It can transfer force from one place to another. It can increase
the amount of force you apply to a certain task. It can also change the distance, speed, and
direction of the force.
When using the simple machines, you must practice precautionary measures to avoid
accident.

Safety with sharp objects


1. Use sharp tools under adult supervision. Ask for help when having difficulty in using.
2. Choose tools of the right size for your hands. Tools that are too large for your hands can slip
while in use and will cause danger.
3. When using sharp tools, give your full attention to what you are doing. Make sure that you have
good lighting so you can clearly see the tools and your hands.
4. Keep, clean, and return sharp tools to their proper places or storage. Do not leave tools
scattered around your house.

Safety on ramps
1. Look out for and avoid slippery spots.
2. Hold on the handrails.
3. Do not run down or race on ramps.
4. Be extra careful in bringing down patients on wheelchair, baby on strollers, or grocery carts.

Safety on pulley
1. Check the ropes if at the right gauge (thick enough) and are in good condition (not yet brittle
or frayed).
2. Make sure that the knots are tied correctly. If not sure, have it checked by experts.
3. If you like doing activities like ziplining or wall climbing, check the reputation of the place,
competence of attendants, and durability of facilities before you do the ride.
4. Have safety nets and back-up ropes in case the main supporting rope snaps.
Some products have safety symbols used to give
precautions on the danger when the product is not used
properly. Moreover, there are also symbols on highways
and streets that must be observed for safety purposes.
These symbols must be understood and be followed to
avoid accidents. The symbol shown in the right side for
instance means that the road is slippery for vehicles with
tires or wheels.

Simple machines include lever which is a straight or curved rigid


bar that is free to turn about a fixed point. All levers have fulcrum
or fixed point, point of effort, and the load which is being moved.
DAY 2

Levers are of three classes. Class 1 lever has fulcrum between


effort and load; class 2 lever has the load between effort and
fulcrum; and class 3 lever has the effort between the load
and the fulcrum.
Another kind of simple machine is pulley. A pulley is a
grooved wheel that turns around an axle which is held in place
by a mounting bracket. A rope or wire moves along the
wheel’s circumference. Pulley has three points of interests
namely: fulcrum, point of effort at the end of the rope, and the
resistance or load to be lifted.

An inclined plane is another kind of simple machine. It is


a plane tilted in an angle with one end higher than the other.
Another simple machine is a screw. It is a spiral inclined
plane. It is composed of cylindrical body with a spiral ridge
called thread. The thread surrounds from the tip to the head.
On the other hand, an inclined plane or
two inclined planes that meet each other to form a sharp
edge is called a wedge. Wedges are typically good for cutting
and piercing.Examples of wedges are knives, axes, pins, and
nails.
The last kind of simple machine is the wheel and axle. It
is a simple machine that has small disk or shaft called an axle
that is attached to a wheel. The wheel may be a complete
wheel or a crank that turns like a wheel. Examples
of wheel and axle are doorknobs, steering wheels, screw driver,
pencilsharpeners and meat grinders among others.
