the elements such as the character and the setting.
Knowing this, your literary appreciation will be developed and your vocabulary and
comprehension skills may be improved. You will also learn the virtue of courage and bravery that
DAY 1
The Setting of the story refers to the geographic location (places or scene) and time within a
narrative. It makes the story vivid and interesting. Usually, the setting is not said directly, instead,
clues are given for the readers to infer. Setting is the time and place (or when and where) of the
story.
Characters are an important element in short stories because they drive the story as a
whole. Characters who created tension or trouble that would lead to problem/conflict marked as
bad guy is the antagonist or villain. Those characters who portray the role of good guy are the
heroes or the protagonist. Without these two types of characters, narrative would not turn
interesting. Characters can be evaluated through their personal qualities and traits.

Don Juan and his wife Namongan lived in Nalbuan, now part of La Union in the Northern
part of the Philippines. They had a son named Lam-ang. Before Lam ang was born, Don Juan
went to the mountains in order to punish a group of their Igorot enemies. While he was away, his
son Lam-ang was born. It took four people to help Namongan give birth.
As soon as Lam-ang was born, he spoke. He named himself and chose his godparents. At
nine months, he decided he would go and look for his father. During his exhausting journey, he
rested for a while. He fell asleep and had a bad dream about his father's head being stuck on a
pole by the Igorot.

Directions: Evaluate the setting of a narrative and answer the questions below.
Lam-ang was furious when he learned what had happened to his father. He
rushed to the enemies’ village and killed them all, except for one whom he let go so
that he could tell other people about his greatness. Upon returning to Nalbuan in
triumph, he was bathed by women in the Amburayan river. All the fish died because of
the dirt and odor from Lam-ang's body.
Meanwhile, on the next village, there lived a beautiful young woman named
Ines Kannoyan whom Lam-ang wanted to woo. He visited her and brought along with
him his white rooster and gray dog. On his way, he met his enemy Sumarang, one of
Ines’ suitor whom he fought once. Lam-ang found Ines’ house. It was surrounded by
many suitors who brought something with them trying to catch Ines’ attention.

On July 2, 1993, the Feast of Krus ng Wawa was celebrated in honor of the Holy Cross.
Hundreds of devotees joined the religious fluvial procession as the town’s tradition. They were
on board on a decorated barge “ PAGODA”.
As the town people celebrated the festivities, fireworks flamed in the sky
overwhelmed the joy of the viewers. One of the baby rocket (kwitis) fell across the corner of
the Pagoda barge where devotees stayed. All the people boarded panicked and force to
move together on one side of the barge. Overloaded capacity force the barge to tilt. It
collapsed and gradually sank to the river bed. Knowing the incident, Sahjid Bulig a thirteen
year old boy rush to the shore and made a quick response. He jumped into the water to save
a little girl. He brought her ashore and left her safely. For the six times he swam back and
forth, he was able to save six small children.
On the seventh time of his rescue, the tip of the wooden cross of the sinking Pagoda
fell on him. He was unconscious and got drowned.
In the morning after the incident, Sahjid Bulig was found dead together with more
than 200 devotees. It was a day of mourning for the people of Bocaue. For them, this little
boy was a hero.

Battle of Mactan
Year 1521, in the Island of Mactan, a stranger came named Magellan. He was sent by

the King of Spain to ask the chieftain of the island to pay for a tribute. Lapulapu the chief,
was in deep anger and resists to pay, and stand firm on his decision. Magellan with his
disappointment, prepared his men to fight against Lapu-lapu. Soon the battle begun. The
peaceful Mactan waters became warlike sight and turned red. Magellan’s men fell lifeless
and dead. Lapu-lapu and his men rejoice gloriously in their victory for the Filipino liberty.

1. Bakit nabansagan si Ben na “kutingting?”
1. Orihinal. Ang taong malikhain ay totoo sa kanyang nililikha. Hindi ito bunga ng
panggagaya.
2. Mayaman sa idea. Ang Pilipino ay mapangarapin sa buhay. Ginagamit niya ang kaniyang
mga pangarap upang mapayaman ang kaniyang idea sa bisa ng pananaliksik, pagsubok
at matagalang pagsisikap.

5. Nakatayo sa sariling desisyon. Ang taong malikhain ay may kakayahang magpamalas ng
kaniyang paninindigan. Ito ay nakikita sa kaniyang kawilihang pumili ng mga desisyong
naiiba sa karaniwang opinyon at tumuklas ng mga bagay na hindi pa nararating ng isip ng
ibang tao.

magsasara na muna ito habang hindi pa natatapos ang pandemya,” wika ni Mang Arnel.
“Paano kaya ito? Mauubos na rin ang ating naipon, hindi naman tayo nakasama sa
ayuda ng barangay,” nag-aalalang tugon ni Aling Rosel.
Mawawalan ng trabaho ang kanyang ama at mauubos na rin ang panggastos nila sa
araw-araw.
“Hwag kang mag-alala, may naisip akong negosyo dito sa bahay. Marunong naman
akong magkumpuni ng mga sirang kagamitan tulad ng telebisyon at electric fan,” sabi ni Mang
Arnel sa asawa.

There are compositions that are performed softly and there are those played loudly. The
element of music that caters the loudness and softness of music is called dynamics.
Dynamic levels indicate feelings, moods or feelings. Loud sounds are associated with

energy or joy while soft sounds are associated with calmness and peace. Performing music is not
only about knowing the pitch names, notes, rhythm or melody. It is also giving the appropriate
expression and interpretation of the song.
In this lesson, you will learn about the different dynamics which will add beauty to the
performance of a song. You will be able to use these dynamics to create gradual changes in the
volume of the melody in the song to make it more expressive.
Giovanni Gabrieli, an Italian composer in the sixteenth century was credited as one of the first
musicians to indicate dynamics in musical notations. Dynamics is the degree of loudness or
softness in music. It is usually referred to as the volume of musical sounds. Study the tables of
dynamics symbols.

The main purpose of composition is to influence viewing behavior. This requires
understanding the principles of composition in photography and knowing how to lend your
