PROGRAM?

I am a Chemical Engineering student and topics involving the environment goes hand in
hand with my course. One of our roles is to help address environmental challenges by designing
complex solutions in order to maintain the conservation of our surroundings. Chemical engineers
are come up with innovative ways of treating water so that it is safe to consume. They design the
equipment and processes on how to remove harmful pollutants from all sources of water. Same
with the air, chemical engineers design equipment and products such as filters to prevent or clean
up air pollution.

IN TIME OF THIS PANDEMIC, DISCUSS HOW POLLUTION, POPULATION AFFECTS IT.

Humans are the very source of pollution, having to implement quarantines gave a positive
effect to the air pollution that is currently present in many cities. Smoke from vehicles are amongst
the biggest contributors, but due to the implemented quarantines and travel restrictions, there
have been fewer vehicles that are seen outside which made a huge impact in reducing the air
pollution levels. Aside from air pollution, land pollution was also improved during the pandemic.
Litter that is seen on the streets decreased as the number of people lingering outside has also
decreased, same goes for the water pollution and noise pollution.
DEFINE THE FOLLOWING

a. acid rain
Acid rain is one of the consequences of air pollution. Gases that are produced by
the burning of fuels in the industry and power stations as well as smoke from vehicles
react with the oxygen in the air and are transformed into acid rain.

b. global warming
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the world's
atmosphere and oceans. Global warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. Carbon
dioxide and other greenhouse gases trap the Sun's heat radiation and reflect it back to
earth.

c. greenhouse gases
Greenhouse gases are gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4). They
let the heat from the Sun into the atmosphere, but do not allow the heat to escape back
into space, the buildup of these gases in the atmosphere lead to the occurring global
warming.

d. climate change
Climate change is any change in Earth’s climate that lasts for an extended period
of time. These changes are caused by human activity and is linked to the emission of
greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.

e. ozone depletion
Ozone layer depletion is the thinning of the earth’s ozone layer due to the ozone
depleting substances which most are also strong greenhouse gases
Are these COVID 19 caused by air pollution? Justify your answer.

The Covid 19 virus is not directly caused by the air pollution, however, it has some possible
effects. Exposure to air pollution may increase vulnerability and have harmful effects on the
patients affected by COVID-19 infections. It has been known that long-term exposure to air
pollution is associated with an increased risk of respiratory diseases and deaths so it may have
contributed to the spread and longevity of the presence of the virus in the air.
