David Carson

Artist Presentation
Background Information
Born September 8th, 1955 in Corpus Christi, Texas

Was not an artist until later in his career

Originally a competitive surfer (ranked 8th in the world)

Was also a high school teacher in California

How he discovered art
Decided to enroll into a two week commercial design course

He knew after this course that he had discovered his calling

Chose to enroll into a commercial arts school

His two big but early on projects were being a designer on a surfers magazine
titled Self and Musician as well as a part time designer for Transworld
Skateboarding
His Style
Carson has a unique way of overlapping
photos while also altering text

This art style is known as Grunge Typography

Art into Career
Many business began to take notice of Carson's and wanted him apart of their
teams

In 1989 he became art director for a magazine titled Beach Culture

Unfortunately the journal only lasted 6 issues but with that short amount of time he
was able to earn more than 150 design awards

In 92’ he’s hired to alternative music magazine Ray Gun

Carson would continue on with his highly successful pieces that grab the attention
of the youth earning him collaborations with companies such as Nike and Levi
Today’s work
Today David puts out work for himself every now and then

He is always helping out magazine companies and brands looking for his style for
marketing
