Hands-On Exercise:
RTD Protection Testing
In this exercise, you will configure RTD protection for a transformer using the SEL-751A. In the
one-line diagram shown in Figure 1, a 62.5/125 μm fiber-optic cable connects an SEL-2600D
RTD Module to an SEL-751A. One 100-ohm platinum RTD is measuring top-oil resistance and
one 100-ohm platinum RTD is measuring resistance from the transformer winding. The
protection for this transformer should be configured to do the following:
SEL-751A SEL-2600D
Transformer
Top-Oil
Winding
Protection Requirements
The RTD protection scheme must do the following:
Assert RTD1 alarm pickup (ALTMP1) if the top-oil resistance exceeds 130 Ω*
Assert RTD2 alarm pickup (ALTMP2) if the winding resistance exceeds 157 Ω*
Assert RTD trip pickup (ALTMP2) if the winding resistance exceeds 175 Ω*
Assert breaker contacts when ALTMP2 asserts
Configure three front-panel display points to reflect the RTD1 and RTD2 alarms and
RTD2 trip conditions
*See Figure 2 for temperature to resistance conversions.

RTD Enable
Step 1. Because both 100-ohm platinum RTDs are located within the transformer,
set E49RTD = INT.
Testing
Step 1. Connect the potentiometer leads to the SEL-751A RTD2 connections as shown in
Figure 6.
Step 2. Open the ACSELERATOR QuickSet terminal server application and click
Tools > HMI > HMI.
Note: This assumes that communication parameters have already been configured.
Step 3. Record the RTD values for RTD1 (top-oil) and RTD2 (winding) values:
Max Winding RTD = ____
Max Other RTD = ____
RTD 1 OTH = ____
RTD 2 WDG = ____
Step 4. Turn the potentiometer dial counterclockwise until RTD 2 WDG > 50°C.
Step 5. Record the front-panel display point information from the SEL-751A LCD:
OIL_WINDING = ________
WINDING = ________
