Moon-Kin

-For this setting I imagine the Moon-Kin come from a far-flung dimension or the fey realm.
They are fairly primitive in their technology, but deeply spiritual. When the elves abandoned
Nargothrond they opened many portals and rifts to taint the land so it would be un-inhabitable to
their human aggressors—this is how the Moon-Kin arrived in the land of Zem. They travel in
migratory bands that are rarely sedentary and probably bring easy to erect shelters or know caves
and ruins that they can inhabit while they occupy certain areas. Most of them tend toward the
naturalistic classes (druid, ranger, and barbarian), but they are capable of learning to be any class
if they have access to the right teachers and tools.
Physical Description: Moon-kin are bipedal sentient owlbears with antlers or horns. Like their
owl-bear forefathers they have feathers along their heads, upper torso, and arms, but they are
flightless. Most moon-kin are fairly tall 6’-8’ in height, and similarly quite bulky. Their beaks
make it difficult to enunciate typical humanoid languages, so they often substitute a chirp or beak
click in place of problematic sounds.
Age: Moon-Kin mature and age much like early hominids. They reach adulthood around 16-20
years old, and are considered venerable elders in their 40’s and 50’s.
Abilities: You may add +1 to one ability score of your choice, and +2 to another (they must be
separate).
Alignment. Moon-Kin thrive in the confines of nature, against the ways of man and their laws,
making many of them become chaotic alignments (however, alignment is dumb so just do what
you’re going to do)
Size. Moon-Kin are bigger and heavier than humans, towering over them at around 7 feet, and
300-400lbs.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision 60’. Your ancestors had to see in the darkness of the night, to hunt efficiently. You
can see in dim light within 60’ of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim
light. Dim light rules indicate that you only perceive colors as shades of gray, that ability checks
made with sight are at disadvantage, and that passive perception takes a -5 penalty.
Keen Senses. You have proficiency in Perception, and when making a Perception check relying
on smell, you may double your proficiency bonus for that check.
Claws. You possess sharp claws on your hands, used for ripping and tearing flesh. When you
make an unarmed strike with your claws, they deal 1d4 slashing damage, instead of the
bludgeoning damage normal for an unarmed strike.
Powerful Build. You count as one size larger when determining your carrying capacity and the
weight you can push, drag, or lift.
Band Mark. You know one cantrip of your choice from the druid list. Wisdom is your
spellcasting ability for it. (your mark likely includes some bleaching or staining of your fur)
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common, and Moon-Kin: a language of growls and
barks and your dialect of it sprinkles in bits of cooing and hoots. Written language takes the form
of abstract pictograms that convey loose meanings rather than specific sounds.
