Assignment No.

1: (Pavement Engineering)

• A set of dual tires has a total load 2Pd of 9000 lb. (40 kN), a contact radius of 4.5 inch.
(114 mm) and a center to center tire spacing Sd of 13.5 inch. (343 mm). Determine the
ESWL by Boyd and Fostor’s Method for a 13.5 inch. (343 mm) pavement. Also calculate
ESWL analytically.

• Determine the Load Equivalency Factor for the vehicle shown below according to
AASHTO.

What will be the ESAL for such 10000 vehicles? If the expected annual traffic growth
rate is 4% for such vehicles, determine the design ESAL for a design period of 20 years.

• During the first year of service, a pavement (a rural interstate highway) is expected to
accommodate the following number of vehicles in the classes shown. Estimate the
ESALs.

Vehicle Type Number of Vehicles

Single Unit Truck
Two axles, four tires 87600
Two axles, six tires 23600
Three axles or more 4400
Tractor – Semitrailer
Four axles or less 2100
Five axles 7300
Six axles or more 50200

If the traffic using the pavement grows at an annual rate of 4%. Determine the design
ESAL for a 20 years design period.
