Working with Manuscript

Headings.
HEADING
Headings are word-group indicating the
topics of text in a document. They assist the
writer to concentrate on each topic when
preparing the document and they give an
idea about the contents of the document.
TYPES OF HEADINGS

Five types of headings are:

❖ Document Heading
* Main Heading
* Sub-Heading

❖ Section Heading
* Paragraph Heading
* Shoulder Heading
* Marginal Heading
Document Heading
This is the heading text at the top of a new page
indicating the general or specific topic of the document.
This heading is of two kinds;
First level heading – Main heading/Subject heading-
indicating the general idea of the whole document. The
main heading is a first level heading which has the
greatest importance in the document.
Document Heading E.g.
COMMUNICATION

This heading is usually blocked when using blocked


paragraph but may also be indented.
Second level heading –Sub
heading
Indicating the specific ideas of a particular
document. This has a slightly less emphasis
than the first level heading.
Sub Heading E.g.
MAIN HEADING

SUB-HEADING

This would then be the body of the document. Two clear


line spaces are left before typing the body.
Paragraph Heading-
Heading text which is apart of a paragraph
text. It may be aligned left or indented
according to the style of the paragraph text
and may or may not be followed by a
punctuation mark.
Paragraph Heading E.g.
Young Men In Todays Society: This is how a
paragraph heading is to be typed.
Shoulder Heading-
A heading text which is above the paragraph
text as a shoulder. It must be blocked
irrespective of the style of the paragraph text.
Triple line spacing is left between a preceding
paragraph text.
Shoulder Heading E.g.
Pager:
A pager system is used when officials have
to be away from their offices.
Marginal/Side Heading
A heading text in the left margin or at the
left side starting parallel with the first line
of the paragraph text which may be of
any style.
Marginal Heading E.g.
Pager: This is a device consisting of
a small radio receiver which
must always be switched on.

What are paragraphs?
A distinct section of a piece of writing,
usually dealing with a single theme and
indicated by a new line, indentation, or
numbering.
Types of Paragraph
In preparing documents various paragraphs
styles are used.

▪ Blocked paragraph
▪ Indented paragraph
▪ Hanging paragraph
▪ Inset paragraph
Blocked Paragraph
In blocked paragraph, all lines begin at
the margin.
Example of a Blocked Paragraph
Indented Paragraph
The indent paragraph style begins with an
indentation in the first line.

Hanging Paragraph
Hanging paragraph are the least
frequently used paragraph style. With this
style the first line begins at the left
margin while the other lines are indented
by three spaces.

How to set the hanging paragraph.

In order to achieve this, after typing the


text:

Highlight the paragraph


Click on the hanging indent marker and
drag it to the desired position.
Or before the typing
Inset Paragraph
When is done when a quotation has been
used, to highlight the text or in order to
create emphasis. The inset is normally
made at 0.5 inches.

In order to achieve this:

▪ Select the text to be inset


▪ Click the page layout
▪ Use the indent controls to make the
necessary changes.
