n Nouns
vs.
Nouns can be divided into two groups, common nouns and proper nouns. All nouns that are not
“proper nouns” are grouped together as “common nouns”.

Proper
Nouns

Proper nouns

 Names of specific people, places, things or ideas. (e.g.) Luke, Rome, Ferrari, Nike.
 These nouns are naming SPECIFIC things; therefore they begin with a capital letter.
 Sometimes they contain, two or more words, therefore both words are capitalised (e.g.)
Luke Rossi, Central Park Zoo, Pacific Ocean.

Common Nouns

 These are generic nouns. They name people, places , things or ideas that are NOT SPECIFIC
(e.g.) woman, city, dog, shoe, bottle, hat
 Since these nouns are not naming anything in specific, they do not start with a capital letter
unless they are at the beginning of a sentence.
