Dan Riskin

Dan Riskin is the host of Animal Planet's popular show about parasites Monster's
Inside Me. Dan's research has focused on the biomechanics of bat locomotion, and he
is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at the City University of
New York. As a renowned expert on bats with a particular interest in parasites, Dan is
passionate about connecting science to everyday life and inspiring students (adults
too!) to discover that science is fun. At the New England Day of Discovery, Dan will
share personal stories about his experience as a biologist, assistant professor, and
host of the popular Animal Planet series Monsters Inside Me. He’ll reveal some of his
latest research on the locomotion of bats; describe how mentoring played a role in his
development; and provide his insights on the power of technology to support scientific
research. While science is his area of expertise, Dan recognizes the need to engage
today’s tech-savvy student not only in science education, but also across all academic
disciplines.

Engage Your Students Using Green Screening Magic (Room 206)
Danielle Kay (DEN STAR, Brockton Public Schools)
Green Screen technology provides students with the ability to conceptualize, visualize, share, and
communicate information about the world while being virtually there at the same time. This engages and
excites learners and provides a sense of reality and purpose for learning with in the classroom. It also
provides cross-curricular learning options and adds a new dimension to learning in the digital age environment
not previously possible. These tools for learning give students opportunities to exhibit their writing to others, to
use emerging technologies, and to communicate their research in a personally meaningful way (using Web 2.0
tools). In addition, the students are able to view their world from a more connected, global perspective, and to
engage more complex dimensions of human perception. For educators it is an emerging digital tool with
potential to enhance learning that uses real-world data visually. In this workshop you will learn how to place
students from your classroom into discovery videos using apple software.
This session is applicable to all curriculum areas.
