CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
Emphasis on creating awareness and stirring up interest in architectural and urban heritage,
supplying an overview of the concept of architectural and urban conservation, providing students
with the knowledge about the basic concepts related to conservation, preservation and
restoration of historic buildings.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
Aims and objectives of this course are to provide the students to prepare a small-scale
restoration project to improve their skills in practice. The topics include measured
Survey of an architectural monument or group of buildings,
Preparation of documents of the building to be restored.
Measured drawing of the details.
Decision of necessary Intervention method and preparation of restoration project
(Preparing restitution and restoration plans, sections, facades, ceiling plans in the scale of
1/50 within the context of the survey )
3D model drawing(if necessary)
On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed knowledge and
understanding of:
- Concept of architectural and urban conservation,
- Different measuring techniques,
- Phases of measured drawing,
- Detecting material and Structural decays on Historic buildings,
- Preparation of an architectural conservation project.
On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their skills in:
- understanding the architectural & urban conservation
- differences between measure drawing, restitution and restoration,
- analysing the types of decay and deterioration in the historic building components,
- working in groups (personal & key skills),
- making historical and technical research (personal & key skills).
On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their appreciation of
and respect for values and attitudes regarding the issues of:
- Conservation of cultural heritage
GRADING CRITERIA
The basic information about the measured drawing and its phases (restitution, restoration,
adaptive reuse and the report of the project) that are introduced in this course are important as
well as the analysis of the given example buildings. The approach of student to a cultural
heritage, specifically to architectural heritage will be graded through given tasks/example
buildings. Furthermore, the studies will have site work & archival studies in order to complete the
restoration project. All phases will be graded totally at the end of the semester.
The principles, techniques of conservation and restoration, which will be provided in this course,
are supposed to have a positive contribution to the analysis of the historic projects sites.
The topics will be lectured with the support of OHP and slide show. The students will be
encouraged to participate in the discussions on the course topics. Seminars focus on
measurement and drawing technics of survey. Technical excursions will be organized as a part of
the lectures provided. Students will be required to complete restoration project’s drawing/s either
in the studio and or at home. They also need to explain their projects individually even they
worked in the group.
ASSIGNMENTS
Assignment 1 (Individual work): Preparing measure drawing of your own room and its adjacent
room. In the first phase of the project, you will make sketch plan and take all measurements
(running, triangle, aligned) and transfer them onto you sketch plan. Photos from interior and
exterior that shows all details of these 2 rooms need to be taken. Then you will take the
measurements for section and façade drawings. The measured drawings of the rooms will be
drawn with AutoCAD (1/50 including measurements, space name, material name/s, levelling).
Final Assignment: a. Report Writing (Group Work): Group of 4 students will select a
monumental building (except mosque or church) between 500-750 m2 from their city which
restoration project has already been prepared by local authorities. Tasks of the group of students
include:
Taking photos of the selected monumental building with the date
Preparing the ‘Measured Drawing, Analysis and Restoration Report’ of the Project (A4
size booklet)
ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend the lectures as regularly as possible. Those who fail in more
than 20% of the term would be graded NG and will not be able to attend the final exam.
