This British Standard is the UK implementation of EN 13598‑1:2020.
It supersedes BS EN 13598‑1:2010, which is withdrawn. It also partially
supersedes BS 4660:2000.
The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical
Committee PRI/88/1, Plastics piping for non‑pressure applications.
A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on
request to its committee manager.
The responsible UK committee gives the following advice concerning the
scope and contents of EN 13598‑1:2020.
• Main changes from previous version: Attention is drawn
to the European foreword, which lists the main changes from
EN 13598-1:2010.
• Intended use: Attention is drawn to the intended use detailed in
the scope of this standard. Whereas BS EN 13598-1:2010 covered all
inspection chambers for use in shallow non-roadway applications (to
a maximum depth of 1.25 m), the scope has now changed to cover
the use of shallow chambers on private drains which are located in
pedestrian areas above the ground water table to a maximum depth
of 2.0 m from ground level to the invert of the main channel.
• Guidance on use and installation: Clause NA.6.4 of the National
Annex to BS EN 752:2017 gives the UK guidance on access to drains
and sewers, especially in respect of provision and spacing of access,
clear opening size at the surface and dimensions for operational
needs. Attention is also drawn to Building Regulations when applying
this standard.
• Recycled materials: The use of recycled or reprocessed materials
is encouraged in the UK. However, their use should be strictly in
accordance with this standard.

European foreword

This document (EN 13598-1:2020) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 155 “Plastics
piping systems and ducting systems”, the secretariat of which is held by NEN.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2020, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by November 2020.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

This document supersedes EN 13598-1:2010.

Compared to the previous version, the main changes are listed below:

1) test methods have been updated to the latest EN ISO standards where applicable;

2) the scope has been amended to clarify the products covered in this part and avoid confusion with the
scope of part 2;

3) terms and definitions have been updated and also now include the product diagrams;

4) dimensional requirements have been updated and clarified;

5) the mechanical characteristics tables have been updated;

6) Annex A has been updated with requirements for the utilization of non-virgin materials for shallow
chambers.

This document is part of a System Standard for plastics piping systems of a particular material for a
specified application. There are a number of such System Standards.

System Standards are based on the results of the work being undertaken in ISO/TC 138 “Plastics pipes,
fittings and valves for the transport of fluids”, which is a Technical Committee of the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO).

They are supported by separate standards on test methods, to which references are made throughout the
System Standard.

The System Standards are consistent with general standards on functional requirements and on
recommended practice for installation.

EN 13598 consists of the following parts under the general title Plastics piping systems for non-pressure
underground drainage and sewerage — Unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U), polypropylene (PP) and
polyethylene (PE):

— Part 1: Specifications for ancillary fittings and shallow chambers (this document);

— Part 2: Specifications for manholes and inspection chambers (under revision);

— Part 3: Guidance for assessment of conformity (CEN/TS under revision).

1 Scope
This document specifies the definitions and requirements for ancillary fittings and shallow chambers
installed underground in non-pressure drainage and sewerage systems and manufactured from
unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U), polypropylene (PP), polypropylene with mineral modifier
(PP-MD) or polyethylene (PE) intended for use for:
— non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage outside the building structure (application area
code “U”), and

— non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage for both buried in ground within the building
structure (application area code “D”) and outside the building structure.

This is reflected in the marking of products by “U” and “UD”.


It also covers the jointing of the ancillary fittings and shallow chambers to the pipework system.
The ancillary fittings covered by this standard are the following:
— sealed access fittings;

— rodding point covers;

— rodding tees;

— mechanical saddles.

Ancillary fittings according to this document are intended for use in pedestrian areas, except rodding tees
and mechanical saddles which can also be used in vehicular trafficked areas.
NOTE 1 Pedestrian areas are as defined in EN 124-1.

Ancillary fittings can be installed to a maximum depth of 6,0 m from ground level, with the exception of
rodding point covers.
Shallow chambers according to this document are intended for use in private drains located in pedestrian
areas above the ground water table, to a maximum depth of 2,0 m from ground level to the invert of the
main channel. This document covers shallow chambers with flow profile bases, and their joints to the
piping system.
NOTE 2 Manholes and inspection chambers are specified in EN 13598-2 [1].

Ancillary fittings and shallow chambers complying with this document also comply with the general
requirements given in EN 476.
Ancillary fittings and shallow chambers can be manufactured by various methods e.g. injection moulding,
rotational moulding, spiral winding or fabricated from components made to other standards.
NOTE 3 Products complying with this document can be used with pipes, fittings and other components
conforming to any of the plastics products standards listed in Clause 2, providing their dimensions are compatible.

NOTE 4 Products complying with this document can be installed in underground applications without additional
static calculation.

NOTE 5 Ancillary fittings and shallow chambers can be subject to national safety regulations and / or local
provisions.

diameter by cutting a hole in the larger pipe and is retained in position by mechanical means

Note 1 to entry: In case of a one-piece shallow chamber, for testing purposes the base component ends at a
distance of minimum 300 mm measured from the top of the main channel. Above 300 mm the section should be
considered as a riser and tested accordingly.

Note 2 to entry: The benching is the transition between the formed channel and the inside wall of the base.

considered as a base and tested accordingly.

5 Material
5.1 Ancillary fittings

The material shall conform to EN 1401-1, EN 1852-1, EN 12666-1, EN 13476-1, EN 13476-3 or


EN 14758-1 as applicable, including use of non-virgin material.

5.2 Shallow chambers

The material shall conform to EN 1401-1, EN 1852-1, EN 12666-1, EN 13476-1, EN 13476-3 or


EN 14758-1 as applicable, including use of non-virgin material.
Alternatively non-virgin material may also be used up to 100 % in accordance with the conditions and
requirements in Annex A.

5.3 Sealing ring retaining components

It is permitted that sealing rings are retained using means made from polymers other than PVC-U, PP or
PE.

6 General characteristics
6.1 Appearance

When viewed without magnification the following requirements apply:


— the internal and external surfaces shall be smooth, clean and free from grooving, blistering,
impurities and pores and any other surface irregularity likely to prevent their conformity with this
standard;

— spigots shall be cleanly cut and the ends of pipes and fittings shall be square to their axis.

6.2 Colour

Ancillary fittings if manufactured in layers shall have their surface layers coloured throughout. The
outside layer of ancillary fittings should preferably be black, orange brown (approximately RAL 8023 [2])
or dusty grey (approximately RAL 7037 [2]). Other colours may be used.
6.3 Assemblies

Ancillary fitting assemblies can be a combination of two or more plastics components, provided that all
other requirement of this standard are met.
Components of other than plastics materials shall conform to the relevant European Standards.

7 Geometrical characteristics
7.1 General

All dimensions shall be measured in accordance with EN ISO 3126. Geometrical characteristics
supplementary to those specified in this standard shall be declared by the manufacturer and shall
conform to the minima specified in EN 476.
7.2 Dimensions
7.2.1 General

The nominal diameter of ancillary fittings shall be that of the pipe which can be connected to its outlet
except that in the case of mechanical saddles the size of the main pipe and branch connection shall be
specified.
The nominal diameter of the riser (DN/ID or DN/OD) shall be used to designate the nominal size of
shallow chambers.

7.2.2 Design lengths

The design lengths shall be declared by the manufacturer.


NOTE The design lengths (Z-lengths) are intended to assist in the design of moulds and are not intended to be
used for quality control purposes. ISO 265-1 [3] can be used as a guideline.

7.2.3 Dimensions of ancillary fittings

The wall thickness of the body and the spigot (emin) for pipe connections shall not be less than those
specified in EN 1401-1, EN 1852-1, EN 12666-1, EN 13476-1, EN 13476-2, EN 13476-3 or EN 14758-1
for a fitting or component of the same material and nominal diameter.
The wall thicknesses of sockets (e2 and e3) shall not be less than those specified in EN 1401-1, EN 1852-
1, EN 12666-1, EN 13476-1, EN 13476-2, EN 13476-3 or EN 14758-1 for a socket of the same material
and nominal diameter.
The diameters, length of sockets (A) and length of spigots (L1,) shall not be less than those specified for a
fitting in EN 1401-1, EN 1852-1, EN 12666-1, EN 13476-1, EN 13476-2, EN 13476-3 or EN 14758-1.
7.2.4 Dimensions of shallow chambers

The wall thickness of the base body including the first 300 mm of any integral riser measured from the
top of the outlet shall be specified by the manufacturer. For pipe connections the wall thickness of the
spigot/socket shall not be less than those specified in EN 1401-1.
For all separate riser components and integral risers above the first 300 mm the wall thickness shall be
determined by the stiffness requirements in Table 3.
NOTE The requirement for wall thickness of the spigot/socket for pipe connections is not applicable for riser
to base assembly or sockets or spigots of risers.

Socket (dsm) and spigot (dem) diameters, length of engagement (A), length of spigots (L1) and their
tolerances shall enable compatibility to pipe work in accordance with the product standards of the pipes
that they are intended to be connected to.
For vertical assemblies the diameters and lengths of sockets shall be specified by the manufacturer.
7.3 Additional requirements for sealed access fittings

Circular openings in access fittings shall have a minimum diameter greater than 50 % of the internal
diameter of the fitting subject to a minimum of 90 mm.
Rectangular access fittings shall have minimum opening dimensions of 150 mm and 90 mm measured on
their longitudinal and transverse centre lines.

8 Mechanical characteristics
Using the indicated parameters, the products shall have mechanical characteristics conforming to the
requirements given in Tables 1, 2 and 3 as applicable:
— Table 1 — Mechanical characteristics of sealed access fittings and rodding tees;

— Table 2 — Mechanical characteristics of mechanical saddles;

— Table 3 — Mechanical characteristics of shallow chambers.

When the product is made as a fabricated fitting, it shall comply with:

9 Physical characteristics
9.1 Injection moulded ancillary fittings

9.2 Fabricated ancillary fittings

When tested in accordance with the test method as specified in Table 5 any fabricated ancillary fitting
shall comply with the requirement given in Table 5.

11 Sealing rings
The sealing ring material shall conform to all requirements of EN 681-1, EN 681-2, EN 681-3 or EN 681-
4, as applicable.
The sealing ring shall have no detrimental effect on the properties of the components or fittings and shall
not cause the test assembly to fail the requirements given in Tables 6 and 7.

12 Adhesives
The adhesive shall have no detrimental effects on the properties of the components and of the fittings
and shall not cause the test assembly to fail to conform to Tables 6 and 7.
The adhesive shall comply with EN 14680.
As an alternative, adhesive complying with EN 14814 may be used.

13 Marking and additional documentation


13.1 General

Marking elements shall be printed or formed directly on the fitting or be on a label in such a way that
after storage, handling, and installation, the required legibility is maintained.
Two levels of legibility of the marking on fittings are specified for the individual marking aspects given in
Tables 7, 8 and 9. The required legibility of marking is coded as follows:
A: durable in use;
B: legible at least until the system is installed.
NOTE The manufacturer is not responsible for marking being made illegible due to actions during installation
and use such as painting, scratching, covering of the components or by use of e.g. detergents on the components
unless agreed with, or specified by the manufacturer.

Marking shall not initiate cracks or other types of defects, which adversely influence the performance of
the fitting.
Marking by indentation reducing the wall thickness less than 0,25 mm shall be deemed to conform to this
clause without infringing the requirements for the wall thickness specified in this standard.
The size of the marking shall be such that the marking is legible without magnification.
13.2 Minimum required marking, sealed access fittings and rodding tees

Utilization of non-virgin material for shallow chambers

A.1 Utilization of non-virgin materials


The use of own reprocessed material generated from products complying with this standard is permitted
without additional requirements.
Own reprocessed material from other products shall comply with the requirements for external non-
virgin material.
External non-virgin material is permitted to be used alone or added to virgin or own reprocessed material
or a mixture of those two materials.
The use of external non-virgin material is permitted under following conditions:
— the manufacturer shall establish an agreed specification with the non-virgin external material
supplier which shall at least address all characteristics including permitted deviations according to
Tables A.1, A.2 or A.3;

— the maximum amount of external non-virgin material in the compound/formulation shall be


specified in the quality documentation by the manufacturer;

— the quantity of external non-virgin material that is actually added in each production series shall be
recorded by the manufacturer;

— conformity with all the requirements of this document shall be demonstrated with the maximum
amount of external non-virgin material specified by the manufacturer;

— the non-virgin material supplier is responsible for claiming and ensuring that the quality plan
conforms to or is no less stringent than the relevant requirements of EN ISO 9001 [4].

NOTE If the non-virgin material supplier is certified ISO 9001, this requirement is deemed to be fulfilled.

Each delivery shall be covered by a documentation showing conformity to the agreed specification.
This documentation may be issued either by the non-virgin material supplier or the manufacturer as
agreed between the parties.

Test methods for mechanical saddles

B.1 General
The saddle shall be installed according the installation instructions of the supplier, on to a PP, PE or PVC
main pipe class SN2, SN 4, SN8 and SN16 as applicable which fulfils the requirements of EN 13476 series,
EN 1401-1, EN 1852-1, EN 12666-1 or EN 14758-1. The total length of the main pipe shall be 8 × DN or
2 m whichever is the greater. An inlet pipe (highest available stiffness class) shall be installed in the
mechanical saddle. The end of the inlet pipe within the saddle shall be cut square and clean.

B.2 Test equipment


In addition to that specified by the test method, equipment as schematically described in Figures B.1, B.2,
B.3 and B.4 is required.
Execute all tests starting with the arrangement described in Figure B.1.

B.3 Procedures
B.3.1 Resistance to vertical load – pipe stop test

Support the main pipe internally, if necessary, next to the mechanical saddle in such a way that the main
pipe cannot deform more than 5 % of the diameter. The internal support shall be installed directly next
to the parts of the mechanical saddle exposed within the main pipe - see Figure B.2.

Place the load of 15 kN on top of the inlet pipe. Evenly apply the load within a maximum period of 90 s.
Hold the load for a period of 300 s.
Unload the inlet pipe directly and check, during and after the test if the assembly fulfils the requirements.
NOTE If the mechanical saddle is intended for use with a settlement device or construction e.g. a temporary
flexible end stop, the settlement device or construction is incorporated in the test as described in Figure B.2. All

B.3.2 Mechanical strength

Substitute the inlet pipe of the test described in B.1 by an inlet pipe of 1 000 mm length- see Figure B.3.
Substitute the mechanical saddle used in the last test by a new one with an unused settlement device or
construction if applicable.
Fix the main pipe to the horizontal support at the stated distance.
Provide the main pipe with end-caps.
Install anchoring devices to prevent the components pushing apart under the effects of internal water
pressure.

Apply a horizontal load of 0,15 kN to the inlet pipe along the axis of the main pipe at a distance of
1000 mm above the crown of the main pipe.

The load should be applied evenly over a period of 90 s. Hold the load for the testing time of 300 s.
Repeat the test with the load applied at 90° to the axis of the main pipe.
Remove the load and check to ensure that the assembly meets the test requirements.

B.3.3 Tightness under deformation

If necessary, substitute the inlet pipe of the test carried out as described in B.3.2 above for a shorter one.
Provide the inlet pipe with an end cap.
Install anchoring devices to prevent the components pushing apart under the effects of internal water
pressure.
Vertically load the main pipe as shown in Figure B.4 until a deformation of 10 % is achieved (5 % if the
main pipe is > 500 mm).
Test the assembly against the test parameters as described in Table 6.
Remove the load and check to ensure that the assembly meets the test requirements.

Resistance to vertical loading of shallow chambers

Test with the shallow chamber buried in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions to a depth of
600 mm (the box load apparatus described in ISO 13260 [6] is a suitable means of testing). Two pieces of
SN 4 pipe 0,5 m long should be fitted to the inlet and outlet joints of the main channel.
On completion of the test and before dismantling, the shallow chamber shall be checked for water
tightness as described in Table 7 and EN 476.
