Theme: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity
Math Choice Board Bingo
In celebrating this year’s theme and keeping with social distancing/Covid guidelines, have your students
to utilize this choice board in their discovery of Black History Month from February 1-28. The minimum
is four (including the free space). Encourage students to focus on the rich tapestry of diversity and how
these contributions help to make our nation unique and strong. Document your exploration through
school-approved and appropriate videos, photographs, and other submissions. Together, we are the
Hawk Nation!

Imagine that you have been selected to
create a memorial to a famous African-
American mathematician. Create a
design proposal that includes the site,
sketch (that could include
measurements), and a brief written
statement about this person to appear
on a placard on the memorial.
On August 28, 1963, 250,000 people of
all races went to Washington, D.C. to
hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. deliver a
speech. Create a representative map of
the attendees. Decide how many
symbols you will need to represent the
number in attendance and create a key
to show how many people equal one of
your symbols.
Gladys West’s studies led to the
development of the Global Positioning
System or GPS. Pick a location in the
United States that you would like to
visit. Create a list of directions to get
there from Folsom Jr. High School.

expressions to represent the

your creativity. You may even create

Marshall gained notoriety by
becoming the first African-American
Supreme Court Justice. Identify the
total number of African-American
Supreme Court Justices and the total
number of Supreme Court Justices in
history. Create an equation to show
the ratio of African-American
justices to other justices.
Imagine that you have been chosen
to introduce an important African-
American mathematician for a big
award. Write a short speech after
selecting a person and researching
his/her life. Additionally, what
would you name the award and
what would be its purpose?
