Fuel quality
FAME is an abbreviation of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters and is a renewable fuel.

FAME is also known as Biodiesel, RME (Rape seed oil fatty acid Methyl Ester), SME (Soya Methyl Ester or Sunflower
Methyl Ester) and PME (Palm oil Methyl Ester).

Engines may only be used with FAME that meets EN 14214.

EN 14214 is a European standard that describes the quality requirements and test methods for FAME.

The diesel fuel in which FAME is mixed must comply with EN 590.

EN 590 is a European standard describing the quality requirements and testing methods for diesel fuel.

Warning
The user is solely responsible for ensuring all regional/local permits have been obtained. Common rape seed
oil or other pure vegetable and animal oils which do not meet with EN 14214 must not be used as pure fuel or
in a fuel mixture. These products are not approved by UD and will invalidate all warranties in the event of
damage to the engine or exhaust systems.

Warning
The user of the vehicle is solely responsible that the fuel being used is of the same quality as that
recommended by the manufacturer and has been approved in compliance with national legislation. The user is
also responsible for obtaining necessary local dispenses, regional dispenses and/or national dispenses for the
use of FAME.

Handling FAME
It is essential that FAME is handled and stored in the correct manner. Fuel containing FAME is more sensitive to

bacteria growth and water than diesel fuel. The risk of micro-organism growth is reduced by ensuring the fuel tank does
not contain water residue. Oxygen, heat and light can oxidise the fuel and cause precipitation.

Starting and running the engine

High viscosity at low temperatures can increase the risk of faults or blockages occurring in the fuel system. These
characteristics can be improved with a fuel heater. Get in touch with your FAME supplier for information concerning
applicable temperatures for CFPP (Cold Filter Plugging Point). FAME is not recommended for use at temperatures
below -15°C.

Standard diesel for winter use should be used to avoid starting problems.

A heated water separator should be installed on the engine's primary filter as FAME absorbs water from the ambient
air.

Performance
The energy rating for FAME is lower than diesel.

The output/torque of the B30 can drop by up to 3% and fuel consumption will probably increase by a couple of
percentage points

Note: The fuel consumption rating shown on the driver display and information system is applicable for standard fuel
only.

Note: Some smoke on start up is normal.

Components affected
The fuel is only permitted in conjunction with UD fuel tanks.

FAME corrodes paint and dissolves the rubbers and plastics found in O-rings and plastic tanks for example.

FAME has certain solvent characteristics and will dissolve dirt or deposits in the fuel tank. FAME dissolves fuel ageing
products and transports the deposits into the fuel filter. The customers must be aware that in case of alternative use of
FAME fuel and diesel fuel, early clogging of fuel filters may occur. Then it is recommended to clean the tank including
lines and change fuel filters.

FAME dissolves carbon deposits and this carbon mixes with the engine oil.
This reduces the lubricating capacity of the engine oil which leads to shorter service intervals for engine oil and filters.

Use the maximum mileage per tank. Refuelling fewer times reduces the risk of microorganism growth inside the fuel
tank.

The engine heater must have a separate tank for diesel only. For questions regarding available products, installation
and regulations, please refer to suppliers of auxiliary heaters.

If the vehicle is taken out of operation for long periods ( more than 4 weeks), the tank and the entire fuel system must
be flushed with diesel by driving for at least 1 tank fill. If the vehicle operates again with FAME then the fuel filter has to
be replaced at 2000 km.

Service and maintenance is to be carried out in accordance with service information. Refer - Biodiesel FAME, service
recommendations
