I.Practice Task 1

Problem 1: Plutonium-242 undergoes alpha decay. The reaction is represented as

What are the values of a and b in the balanced equation?

Problem 2: Fermium-256 undergoes spontaneous fission. The reaction is represented as

II. Practice Task 2

Try it!
Direction: Write the balanced equation that describe the given reactions.

252
1. The alpha decay of 98Cf
243
2. The spontaneous fission of 95 Am

What do you think?

Can less massive elements, such as lead, be transformed into gold through particle accelerators? Why
do you think so?

Lead can be converted into gold, eliminating 3 of the lead protons, can be made
with a particle accelerator. With sufficient energy you can remove extra protons, even
if the lead is very stable. It may contain many neutrons before it becomes radioactive,
but once it becomes radioactive it undergoes a kind of decomposition that makes it
gain a proton that transforms into a bismuth isotope. Scientists have already turned
bismuth into gold, in 1980 research used carbon and neon nuclei to explode a sheet of
bismuth and produced nine different gold isotopes.

Evaluation
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer, and then write the nuclear reaction. Identify
the
element.

An isotope of element 102, with a mass number of 253 was produced by bombarding
240 96 Cm with a projectile, which was absorbed by the target nucleus. This projectile
should be B) 13 6 C, it’s Carbon 13
a) 5 2 He
b) 13 6 C
c) 12 6 C
d) 16 8 O

III. REMARKS:

Again, it is to foreign for me at my first glance on it, but when the lecture goes further it illuminates
more spaces in some of the grey areas.
