Book 2 Unit 3
(Text 1)
W: How soon can we get to the train station?
M: We’re going 100 kilometers per hour, so we’ll probably get there within ten minutes.
(Text 2)
M: You seem like you’re on top of the world. Did you just get some good news?
W: I won first prize in the English speaking contest.
(Text 3)
W: How do you like the book, Mark?
M: Well, I heard it was interesting, but I really don’t think so.
W: Perhaps it just has too much new vocabulary.
(Text 4)
M: What can I do for you, ma’am?
W: I would like to change RMB to English pounds.
M: OK. How much do you want to change?
W: 2,000 pounds’ worth.
(Text 5)
M: This is such a great photo. We look so happy!
W: Is that little girl your twin sister? How lovely!
M: Yes, we had the photo taken to send to my grandparents. They are living in the countryside now.
They say they miss us very much.
W: If only you could have taken it with your grandparents and your parents — a complete family
photo.
(Text 6)
W: Excuse me, Mr. Brown. Can I leave one hour earlier this afternoon?
M: Why? Are you sick?
W: No. My aunt is in the city now on business, but she’ll leave this afternoon. I really want to see her
before she leaves.
M: How long has it been since you saw each other?
W: At least two years. We’re both very busy with our work and we don’t have time to visit each other.
M: OK. You can leave at 5:00 pm this afternoon.
W: Thank you so much, Mr. Brown.

W: You look so tired. What’s wrong?

M: I’ve been ill for several days. You know, the weather has turned quite cold recently.
W: When did you start feeling sick?
M: This past Monday. I thought I would get better soon, so I didn’t go to see the doctor that day.
W: Well, have you gone to see a doctor yet?
M: Yes. I went the next day.
W: What did the doctor say?
M: He said it was just a bad cold. He gave me some medicine and told me to take it and stay home to
rest, but I just don’t have any time to rest. I had to keep working and now I feel even worse.
W: You really should slow down for a while, or you’ll never get better.
(Text 8)
W: You seem to be lost in thought. What are you thinking about?
M: I’m wondering whether I should buy an iPad 4 or a laptop.
W: What do you want to use it for? To play games?
M: Of course not. I’m going to spend a holiday in China. I want to write about my experiences while
I’m there.
W: Then why not buy a laptop? You can write on it much more easily than on an iPad.
M: It’s just that a laptop is a little heavy. An iPad 4 would be much lighter.
W: That’s true, but I still suggest you buy a laptop. You’ll want to use it for writing even after you
finish traveling.
M: You’re right. People usually use iPads to read books or play games, but I don’t need it to read
books or play games.
W: So are you going to China alone?
M: No. I’ll be traveling with a friend who has been working there for three years.
(Text 9)
For a quarter of a century, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs pushed the development of computing
technology. Steve Jobs was born in February, 1955 and died from cancer in October, 2011. Jobs was
still pushing the development of groundbreaking new products just weeks before he died.
His leadership will be forever remembered at Apple. He helped start the company in the 1970s.
Apple’s first big success was the Apple II personal computer in 1977.
More than ten years ago, Jobs introduced the world to a new MP3 player — the now well-known
iPod. The company introduced the iTunes Music Store in 2003.
A true breakthrough happened in 2007, when Apple first revealed its iPhone. The product is
essentially a computer that can be carried in your pocket. By 2011, the iPhone was selling more than
220,000 units a day.
In 2010, Apple broke into the tablet computer industry with the iPad. The company sold 14.8
million iPads in 2010, which was well beyond what industry experts predicted.

(Text 10)
M: So … who’ve we got?
W: Uh, there are five names here — John, Nancy, Gina, Alice and Paul.
M: John, Nancy, Gina and Paul … and you know them all?
W: Right. I do.
M: Can you tell me about them?
W: OK. Well, John seems like a very friendly guy, but he is a little shy.
M: How about Nancy? I think I know her …
W: Yeah. She is Bob’s daughter. She gives the impression of being someone who is reliable. She’s not
too active, though.
M: What about the other one — Gina?
W: Oh, well, she seems like she’s really hardworking. The only concern I have is ….
M: That she might get bored with the job.
W: Right. She also didn’t seem very friendly, to tell you the truth.
M: What about Alice, your roommate?
W: She is lovely but too careless.
M: Well, that just leaves Paul, then. What’s he like?
W: Paul seems hardworking, too, and very honest, I’d say.
M: He’s done this before?
W: Yeah. He’s got some experience.
M: Well, he sounds like the best one so far. I’d like to meet him.
