Symmetrical Bug Drawing

Instructions
Take a piece of paper
from your sketchbook
and fold it in half.
Starting at the folded
edge of your paper, draw
a random, wavy line that
connects back to the
folded edge.
While your paper is still
folded, cut out your
shape on the wavy line.
Open up your shape and
position it so that it is
vertically symmetrical
(the same on the left and
right side of the fold)
Use crayons or colored
pencils to color in your
shape. Color just one side
to start.
Repeat the same colors
on the other half of your
shape.
Add more color however
you would like to your
shape. Be sure to keep
your coloring
symmetrical.
Using pencil, draw a bug
on top of your shape
USING the shapes you
can already see. Notice
how the antennae of my
bug follow the curves of
my original shape. The
wings and legs also follow
the curves of my original
shape.
Go over your pencil lines
with your Sharpie. Make
them bold so your lines
stand out. If needed, trim
your paper so that it’s
closer to your drawing.
Creating a Leaf
Grab another piece of
your sketchbook paper.
Fold your paper in half
the long way (hot dog
style).

STARTING AT THE
FOLD, draw half of a leaf
shape. You can make your
leaf look however you
want. Make sure the line
connects back to the
folded edge of your
paper.
While your paper is still
folded, cut along the line
you drew.
Open up your leaf shape,
and color it in. You can
use whatever drawing
materials you would like.
Attaching your bug to your
leaf
On the back of your bug,
put a line of glue down
down the middle of your
bug where the fold is. Use
plenty of glue.
Stick your bug onto your
leaf whenever you would
like it. Press the bug
down onto your leaf to
make sure that it
sticks.The edges of your
bug will stick up and look
3D.

If you need to, you can

cover the whole back side
of your paper with glue if
it isn’t sticking well.
