    EARLY TRADE ROUTES AND CONTACTS

    CHAMPA- (present day Vietnam)

    INTERACTIONS WITH THE HINDUS

    Sanskrit Language- leading contribution of Hindus to Filipino culture

    Example: asawa, diwa, lakambini,hari, ina, mana, guro

    Bathala- came from the Sanskrit

    Bhattara Guru- it means “the highest of the supernatural beings”

    SARONG (skirt)- worn by woman

    PUTONG (turban)- a man’s headdress

    BIAG NI LAM-ANG and IBALON – Filipino epics in BICOL that closely resemble the;

    RAMAYANA AND MAHABHARATA- Hindu epics

    Bhramanistic- worship of Bathala

    PARAMISULI- daughter of baginda

    ABU BAKR- married Paramisuli and succeeded in establishing government similar to sultanate of Arabia

    TEACHINGS OF ISLAM

    ISLAM- “submission to the will of God (Allah)

    MUSLIM- “one who submits himself to the will of God (Allah)

    SHAHADA- profession of faith: “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet”
    SALAT- ritual prayers

    ZAKAT- almsgiving

    HAJJ- pilgrimage to Mecca

    SAWM- fasting

    JIHAD- considered the 6th pillar; it means “to struggle” or

    “To exhaust one’s effort” to please god

    FRIDAY- holy day for Muslims

    MOSQUE- special place of worship

    MUEZZIN- the official of the mosque (tower of the mosque)

    IMAM- prayer leader
