INSTRUCTION: Answer ALL questions (50 marks)

QUESTION 1:
Palm oil is an important product of Malaysia. Malaysia exports palm oil after it is separated to
Palm Olein and Palm Stearin. Normally after crude palm oils pass through refinery process, it
will be further processed for Palm Olein and Palm Stearin separation.
(a) Select two unit operations in the palm oil separation process to Palm Olein and Palm
Stearin. Name the unit operations as Step 1 process and Step 2 process, respectively.
Explain the purpose of each unit operation.
(10 marks)

(b) Select the most efficient separation equipment for Step 2 process. The selection needs
to be based on 30 ton/batch process and 100 ton/day of production rate. Temperatures
for both unit operations are at room temperature or lower. Explain why the equipment
is selected and give detail specification of the equipment.
(25 marks)

(c) Draw a PFD to illustrate the unit operations selected in part (a).
(15 marks)
