SIOP Lesson Plan: Addition Stories

Background:
First grade students studying adding objects together. Studying concepts including addition,
vocabulary and using expression language (first, then, together, add). Students will use
manipulatives such as: Base 10 blocks, modeling, and discussion.

English Proficiency Level:

Beginners
Grade:
First
Standards:
Oregon Mathematical Standards- 1.OA.1, 1.OA.2, 1.OA.3, 1.OA.4

Preparation
Content Objectives- Students will learn to better understand mathematical concept of addition
through oral words problems, instruction and use of manipulatives. Students will also practice
writing addition equations based on story problems.
Language Objectives- Students use key mathematical vocabulary while solving word problems
9 first, then, together, plus, add, equals).
Materials:
Base 10 blocks
Dry erase markers
White boards
Scratch paper
Pencils
Index cards with addition equations and corresponding answers
Vocabulary:
Add, equals, plus, together, first, then, sum.
Motivation:
Read an addition poem as a group, “Tens and Ones,” emphasizing key vocabulary words that
will be used in lesson.
Presentation:
Review the addition poem, “Tens and Ones,” and do a group activity with the addition index
cards that have equations and correlating answers on how to solve the equation using key
vocabulary words.
Practice
Put students into groups, give each group a white board, markers and an addition word problem.
Ask students to work with one another to solve equation. Have students take turns on each
person role in the group (ex. Writer, reader) Flow throughout the room to each group and offer
aid in better understanding concepts and ideas while correcting any errors.
Application
Put student into pairs and conduct an activity involving each group to have a white board and
marker. Groups will be given addition story problems and asked to write out the correlating
equations while working together. Repeating this process to ensure each student is grasping
concepts and feel confident with their solving/writing abilities of addition stories.
Review
Using the index cards, build addition equations as a whole group instruction. Going through each
equation's multiple times and repetition of vocabulary words.
Teacher Notes
Have key vocabulary words written on board, along with simple examples of addition equations
as a visual aid for students. Alternate throughout classroom to ensure one on one instruction is
given, as well as group instruction.
