7th Grade Band


Lesson: Christmas Elves Rehearsal 3

Goals for me
-Keep up the pacing, the students have been a little distracted lately
-Don’t spend too much time on one thing
-Don’t over explain, talk less

Warm up

1. Quarter 8th, 8th, quarter, quarter on Bb Scale (Same rhythm as M. 1)


a. March style bouncy, like the piece
2. Model adding staccatos to the last two beats of above pattern
3. Try playing in a round (NEW)
a. Group 1 (Basses): Peyton and Nathan (Kiana if she’s here)
b. Group 2 (Clarinets and alto): Bri, Katie, and Tory (Sierra if she’s here)
c. Group 3 (Trumpets and oboe): Clarissa, Richard, and Jolene
4. Rhythm Exercise (3 min)

-Goal: Learn a new section (25-34)
Christmas Elves 25-34
1. Test run
2. 25 and 26 Clarinets + alto: Still need to work on the “2,3”idea
a. Drill this until they get it
b. Piano!
3. Basses: Play this section
a. “If we could create a picture for this music, what would we imagine?”
b. I think of a big guy that just strolling down the sidewalk
c. Everyone clap along on 2 and 4
4. Isolate melody (Oboe, Clarinet, Alto, Tenor)
a. Count in your head during the rests!
5. Put everything together, give comments where necessary

Depending on time, move on to 35-44


1. We have staccato! (NEW) Reference what we did in the warm-up
2. Everyone has the melody here!
3. It’s staccato and MP
a. Kind of sneaky?
4. Measure 41 goes back to normal note lengths and style
Final Assessment
Review Beginning to at least 34
-This is how far we got yesterday, but we had to rehash things we already fixed.

6. “Now let’s go back to the beginning” Take a deep breath!


7. See how far they can get and make note of what happens
8. Remind the clarinets and altos about the “2,3” in 4-8
9. Remind everyone about the small crescendos on the half notes after 9

Pack up at 1:50!
