Reflection on a Lesson Plan Taught

Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow

Intern Name: Janel Drummond

Subject of Lesson: Math
Topic of Lesson: Comparing Fractions
Age/Grade of Students: 2nd Grade
Date of Lesson: 5/12/21
Time/Length of Lesson: 30 minutes

Before Teaching:
When it came to picking a topic for my lesson it was pretty simple because the students have
math in the morning and the week that I was supposed to teach, they happen to be learning
about fractions. The topic for my lesson was comparing fractions. The first thing I did when it
came to creating the lesson was making a powerpoint relating to pizza because pizzas can be
fractions. Also I found videos that would help explain comparing fractions more. Mrs. Marcus
helped through the whole process when it came to typing up the actual lesson plan and she
looked over my powerpoint to make sure I didn't have too much or too little information.

During Teaching:
The parts that worked as I anticipated were the two videos that I had in the beginning and the
end of my lesson probably because those were the simple parts. My lesson was roughly like 30
minutes long but when I was actually teaching it seemed to be shorter than that and by the
time I was finished it was about time for me to leave. In my lesson I put the wrong answers in the
powerpoint on purpose so the students could guess the correct answer which they did. I guess
that I helped since the day prior to my lesson they were having trouble knowing which fraction
would be bigger with different denominators and numerators.

After Teaching:
One thing I did learn from teaching this lesson was making sure I explain why/how the correct
answer is correct because I forgot to do that sometimes.I think the overall lesson went well on
my half when it came to teaching and for the students I think they got a better understanding
of comparing fractions when we went into small groups. And any time a student would get
stuck at a certain Mrs. Marcus or myself would remind them to think back to my lesson and the
pizzas. If I got the chance to teach this lesson over I would prepare myself more. I was just
nervous and when I'm nervous I speak fast but sometimes I manage to catch myself. And I
would change the way I taught and spoke because I didn't feel confident or wasn't doing well.
Most of all I'm going to miss the students and being in Mrs. Marcus’s three days a week because
it was something funny and different from actually learning in my own classes.
